First - I have a amc 304 with stock type power steering pushing 33" tires. The pump is new and there is a 6 pass transmission cooler on the return line. I need more power steering performance at low engine rpm. It always works fine when I raise rpm over 1000 but if it has been working hard the power steering will quit when the engine is at idle.
There is still 1 washer in the bypass valve that I can remove for the pressure or I can drill out the orfice for the flow.
My question is should I increase flow or pressure?
OR if I am way off base and should try something else?

Here is a post from pirate I saved.
Power steering stuff:
I thought the AGR super box is a rebuilt Waggy Saginaw Model 800 with a 3.0" piston and variable ratio. The only difference is the end cap.
I bought the same box from NAPA for $160.

I would HIGHLY recommend West Texas Offroad

I do not need hydro assist and I want the larger piston easier turning.
Like was already mentioned..just get a Jeep J20 box from Napa and make sure it shows up with the big piston...there's your superbox!!
West Texas is the shit for Hydro Assist / boxes / steering pumps.

Sounds like a bad power valve or worn spring in your power steering pump. Cheap and easy fix, just a little messy.

That, or a smaller diameter pulley might be a need you have.

Well my junk still does not steer correctly, I have since drilled out the orfice per the west texas article and removed all of the washers in the bypass valve.
Is the spring that you refeer to that weak little thing below the bypass valve? and where is the power valve? Is there a way to test / inspect this.
I like the pully idea. I guess the saginaw pump shaft should be pretty common so a smaller pully should be rather easy to find. I am assuming that not all vehicles came with the same diameter pully.
