Anybody have one of these or ever used one. Seems like a good deal if it's worth a crap.

i have searched 20ton presses to death and found that if you have a harbor freight close to you its going to be the best option.
harborfreight sent out a sale flyer for $60 off there 20ton press.
I have a 20 ton HF press which works fine.
The one thing I did was mill the press plates flat and square.

KRB... are they finally shipping CRS plates rather than the cast iron ones?
There is a write up here on those cast press plates flying apart... I'm really surprised no one has been killed by them.
Thanks for the info but this is definately bigger than the HF one. It weights 95 lbs. more. Looks alot like the Arcan 20 ton that Northern tool sales for 399.00 and this one is only 209.00. I am also only about 3 hrs. from their Springfield, MO store so I can save on shipping. Anyone have experience with the Arcan 20 ton.

a few people have blown the press plate apart so be careful and try and find a few chuncks of real, thick steal.

I dont know.Mine are cast.
The chances of them blowing apart is greater if not used properly.

The press I want to get is from www.grizzly.com its a 30 Ton for $209.95 before shipping. There is a Grizzly warehouse about 45 minutes from me so I will order one and pick it up at the warehouse to avoid the $94.00 freight charge.

Does anyone remember who was going to make a bunch of press plates so we don't have to use the cast ones? It started on a thread where some cast ones exploded and injured a board member.

The proper use of a cast press plate is to melt it as scrap. Cast materials tend to be not so good in tension, its just not worth the risk.

you mean compression?
No, I mean tension. The bottom of the plate is in tension and that's where it fails - explosively. :nuke:

cast plates SUCK. i just had a set explode on me while using my dimple dies and it ruined the entire piece of 1/8 inch plate
Been using the cast plates for years,so I guess I'm lucky.
Back to the top cause I picked the press up in Springfield,MO today. Got the 30 ton one in the link for $209. I can tell you right now it is way beefier than the HF one. I am definetly glad HF has been out of theres. Also if you live near one of these stores they are way better than a HF. Anyway I'll get it together tomorrow and post some pics.
O.k. here are some pics of the Grizzly press and it is way beefier than the HF model. Also there 12" disc sander I picked up and I forsee it getting a ton of use.

why dont you tell that to the 3" scar on my face... press was being used with every percaution and still pressing a bushing into a TJ trackbar.. it snapped and one half made a nice "impression"
What size channel for the top & the distance between posts?
This thing uses 6 inch channel on top and for the part where you parts sit. THe sides are like 7 inches. Distance between the posts is 23 3/8".
