Anyone have experience with this mod:

One of my welders is a Handler 180. I don't usually do any Al welding; but a project I am getting ready to do will require running 2-3' of bead on some aluminum adapter plates. I'd rather put the money I was going to spend to farm out the Al work toward this mod and a spoolgun if it actually works.

mig welders are OK on aluminum but a 175+ tig welder would be a hell of alot better. kind of depends on what thickness of aluminum but a tig is better eather way.

what size aluminum you going to weld?

First of all if your welder is under warranty and you put this kit in it voids the warranty.

I don`t think that GTAW is the only way to do Aluminum maybe if it is a hobby and you don`t do all that much.

Most places doing heavy Aluminum work are running The Miller 350P with the Alumna Pro gun or the Miller XRA and Alumna pro gun with the power source of there choice or other manufactures equipment.

With the output of the Hobart I don`t think you will be happy.

Now this company claims to do a lot of these conversions if so ask for some customers in your neck of the woods go try one out in person.

Ask some one at Hobart/ Miller what they think.

If It was me and it is such a little amount of work I would farm it out and see if cash is tight if you could trade some labor that you can do.

I perhaps look at things different.:D

My machine is long since out of warranty; but the more I look into everything I'd have to purchase to get set up for Al work, the more I'm ruling out doing this. In 12 years of welding, this is the first time I've needed to do any appreciable amount of aluminum welding and I doubt the amount I'll need to do in the future (if any) will make this worth it.
