got mine passed, all I can say is have the mandatory equipment for the truck and the engine in which the truck came from. then find a local shop and see what happens. I spoke with several govt agencies and all suggested I do this, form what I gather it's still illegal even if you have done this. Apparently a test must have been done for the particular engine and truck(?).
I actually pulled the engine and everything from the donor truck, thru on a cat. The only thing I did not have was the air pump, but they overlooked it, after failing me twice.

Hey, I think you might set screwed over trying to smog it. At least here in AK, you don't get an exemption for anything over 25 years old...
The way the DMV explained it to me was that, starting in 75, in order to pass IM's, the EPA has an engine/chassis configuration certificate for all vehicles with stock engines. You can switch between engines so long as there is a certificate for it. AKA, if you bought a Chevy P/U with a V-6, but it was offered with a 454, you could swap in that year's 454 and be legal. But, unfortunately, Chevy 350's were never offered with cruisers from the factory...
The guy told me that if I was to do a 350 swap and make it legal, I would have to convert the rig to a '74 (VIN tags and the like), re-register it as a 74 (the last year w/o the certificates), and THEN do the swap. I think if you could find a junker 74 and get the tags from it, you'd be 50-state legal.

you would need to find a 73 to be exempt in all 50 cause i live in california and my 74 with a 350 has to pass by 1974 standards for a chevy 350 and with all smog equipment

I didn't mean exempt. I meant legal. Up here, even 68's have to pass IM's:(
but 74 was the last year you could swap and still pass.
