looks like I am buying a set of junkyard axles set up real nice...but I don't know what abuse they've taken so I want a spare set of shafts. the only problem is that the axles have been proefssionally shortened...how much should I expect to pay for a spare set of shafts and who does a good job on em?

Dutchman is my choice for top quality work.

The custom dutchman shafts I bought for my 60 were 325.00 at set for 35 spline,1.5" SF 5x5.5

I like moser for doing this type of work. Good work and their prices are real good. I recently sent in a scout front d44 shaft to have shortened, it was really rusted up. They attempted to get the seal surface machined but the shaft was too pitted. Instead they sold me a brand new shaft, shortened and splined. Total cost $130 including shipping. They didn't even charge me for the time they wasted on my junk shaft.

Moser or Dutchman www.dutchmanms (http://www.dutchmanms) will both be around $300 just for the shafts, if they are 35 spline or smaller. Mark Willams will be a bit better, but expect to pay about $500 pr.

I vote Dutchmann. Got Moser and Dutchmann shafts and was more impressed with the Dutchmann's

Drivetrain Direct can do it. Then you get rolled splines (unlike Moser). I've dealt with them before on other projects.

Whoooa - are you sure Drivetrain Direct roll splines on custom shortened shafts?

I was under the impression the only rolled splines were on Dana or other OEM shafts - I've never heard of anyone aftermarket rolling splines. Even Strange engineering splines are hobbed, not rolled.

I also thought DD were a distributor/retailer -and they carry many manufacturers products such as Superior and others - I didn't realize they did their own machine work - are you sure this is true?

If so - what alloy and what type of hardening do they use?

I would go with Moser I was very impressed with the shafts I got. The ears significantly larger than a stock shaft and they are cheep it was 130 to my dooor

Oh yeah!! I forgot, I know someone there. So I'm not sure if they would roll them for people off the street?

And I do not know what they can do in-house...But Superior Gear owns them, so if they relly want somehting done, Superior could do it.

And I don't see why they couldn't roll them? If they aneal the shafts, then cut them to length and roll the splines, then re-heat treat, that should work fine...At least as far as my knowledge of metals and heat treats goes(I deal with it all day at work).

I could be wrong though...I don't have the facts in front of me.

But then again, you could just have cut splines shot peened to make up the difference between rolled and cut.

I am going to get Dutchman all the way around when I get some more dough. I wouldn't run Moser because I have had friends twist the splines on them. That is just my personal preference.

Another vote for Dutchman. I've had them cut and respline three axle shafts and purchased two pairs of their shafts. Excellent work and they have an awesome turn around time for resplining. It took just over a week from the time I sent mine off to when I got them back.

the racks (and it takes a pair for each spline) that roll the splines are in excess of 25,000$, to say nothing about the machine itself, thats why nobody rolls them unless you're oem where the cost can be spread over a hell of a lot of units.

I figured that was why (at least as far as I know) only oem roll.

Kicker - can u check with your contact about the spline rolling - I'd really like to know.
