i dont know if this is a good spot for this or not. i wanted to get an idea of some unique tools or unique ways that some of us work on our junk when it brakes on the trail and you dont have your whole garage of tools to use.
what do you improvise with?
specifically i would like to know what everyone is using to remove their spindle to change a ujoint or replace an axle shaft.
ill start with an easy one im sure everyone does:
slip the end of your highlift handle over the end of a wrench for a longer handle. instant breaker bar
or wrap your winch around the axle to act as a jack and get the wheel off the ground.

Let me tell you about a broken axle.... We were out wheeling on a f*cking cold day last month. This area was muddy that was slicker then snot on a door knob. Pop goes an axle ear on a D30 on my friends rig...
We busted three breaker bars on the axle nut...I tried my 1/2" impact wrench running 150 PSI CO2. The wrench let out a miserable fart and was done. CO2 + Cold equals SUCKS.
NEED BF-Breaker Bar...:homer:

3 lb hammer and a chisel will tighten up the nut on the front output of a 205

I always bring an electric 1/2 impact. i have a snap-on 18v works really well. it came with a car charger also. i bring some assorted wrenches and a big hammer. the impact was pricey. but it has saved my but several times. :D

when it brakes on the trail and you dont have your whole garage of tools to use.
The biggest problem I had was taking something out of my truck box to work on my rig, then forgetting and leaving it in the garage instead of back in the truck box. I fixed that problem by getting duplicate sets of wrenches, sockets, etc.
Also, whenever I am out on the trail and end up needing something I don't have, I buy it when I get home and toss it in the truck box. A few years of this and you will be really prepared!

....Mike
