: Busted Lug in an XJ

Guess what my wife did....

Appearently the average female can't tell when a tire is about to fall off. Here's the story... We get in the grocery getter, off to get groceries of course, and I notice this odd noise emanating from the front of the vehicle. After driving 20 feet I stop, and immediately return to the driveway. I starting by checking the lug nuts. I was shocked by what I saw. All four lug nuts were loose. (I'm sure many of you are awear that an XJ comes with a five lug front end.) The fifth lug nut was gone, along with the lug itself. The lug was broken at the base of the wheel. Can you beleive anyone would drive around with a loose wheel long enough to break off a lug? Women:mad:.

Anyway, my question to the group today is....
Can the lug be replaced by itself, or do I need to get a whole new hub assembly? In other words, is this a $5 job or a $150 job?
It's a '98 XJ with 58k miles.

Any thoughts?

Sincerly

you should be able to simply replace the broken lug and lug nut( replace the others if the threads are mauled, which they probably are), worse case scenario would be that your wife (or you if you tightened the lugs) some how messed up the rotor by reeming out the holes, good luck

oh yea, or you can just run on 4 lugs

Bob:

I've got a few extra hubs for TJ/XJs if you need a replacement. $50 and it's yours. ($129 new from Quadratec). I am not sure if the XJs and TJs used the same hubs in 98. TJ hubs are about 3/16s" narrower but you can get spacers from summit racing for about $9.

PM if interested.

The studs should just pop out with a hammer, $2.99 each or so, but most auto store only carry like 2-3qty of each type so order the parts first.

Cheep fix, but yea Im runing 4 lugnuts on one front wheel, at least next weekend I should have 10 spare lugs after the rear swap.

have fun.
