I'm going to assume it's just another small block variant, right?

how are they for pulling? hoping to look at a 1-ton van that has a 5.3

They usually knock pretty good when cold-----piston slap

yep common to all LS style engines.

alot of people complain on them being down on torque compared to the 5.7 they replaced. However, they respond very well to any mods and get killer gas mileage for a truck.

overall I think they're a very good motor..seem pretty reliable and decent in the power department. Are you looking at swapping it out of the van or you're going to use the van?

My buddy has a 5.3 with a pro-charger and that thing just gets it on. He picked up the charger used for $1000 on craigslist. 20 mpg.:D

Great motor, and I'd think a 1 ton van would have a 6.0 or 8.1??

Mo whats the VIN of the van?
This is just an idea of the Vin ID as it might vary from 03-07.
The 6.0L will have a U at the "8th" digit.
5.3L will have a T
4.3L will have a V

I'll take a closer look at the van tomorrow or the next day. all I know about it is that it's a basic white passenger van with 3500 on the side and the dealer is asking 10k. I haven't called or stopped in, just seen it on the side of the road.

I'd be using it as is, mostly for family truckster duty, and possibly to pull a camper on occasion.

I'd love to find a passenger van with the duramax - I thought they were only in work vans though.

Really not worth the trade off for the extra bit of power for the crappy gas mileage it gets. Not sure why they do so poorly mileage wise against the 5.3's.

The reason why they get shittier mileage is they are all in heavy ass trucks shaped like a fucking brick. And its how you drive it.

Shit look at LS2/3 vette's they get pretty good mileage 25-30!
