: CV Joint center ball replacement

Hey,

I've had my rear CV shaft for 2.5 months and the ball is shot already (22* ride angle). I called the company who made it and the fellow said that although that angle is on the upper end of recommended, it certainly should not have worn so quick.

I'll give him credit in that he offered to pick up shipping both ways.

But I'll be out a daily driver (only vehicle I own) for over two weeks (remember I'm in Maine-so shipping takes a while).

My question is, that seeing as I'm new to CV shafts, is it difficult to replce the ball and bobbit? The DS shop expressed concern about balance after (if I did it myself).

So is there anything special I need to know to replace it? I can obviously get it balanced locally (wish I didn't have to pick up this cost right after shelling out a wad o' cash on this DS). I've never had a CV joint apart , so that's why I'm asking.

Thanks,

Charly

Hey Jess,

It's a YJ. Spicer DS components.

I took the forward-most ujoint out tonight along with the socket yoke and ball. In the small shaft (that the ball rides on) there was a spring. On the small shaft was a thin metal ring, and in the ball was a flat, thin metal ring (along with the needles of course).

The small shaft did not look worn, but the ball would VERY loosely move in the socket (and make noise similar to the constant clunking noise that prompted me to remove the shaft).

All three ujoints are in excellent shape. In the past 8 weeks or so the joints and socket yoke have been greased at least 12 times each (religiously after each wheeling trip and weekly).

I think I'm going to just have them send the parts and I'll install them myself. Unless I'm missing something here.

Thanks,

Charly

charly take the metal ring and pop it off if its still on there - the ball stud side- we call them flinger - you fling them over your rh shoulder- they usually cause problems- -does your center ball and socker(wabler) have any end play ? grab the neelde brg side with a pair of internal snap ring pliars and see if you have any in+ out ? Yep, in the socket yoke (flange with the ball in it), the ball has a lot of in + out play.

Since the needle bearings are not in place anymore, I was able to stick my finger in the ball and get the endplay (rather than the internal snap ring pliers).
