Im looking to run 38s on my YJ here soon. This will be a daily driver. Id like to know what are the most streetable 38s out there? Claws, SXs, TSLs, TSL Radials. If none, ill prob go with 37s. Is the Pro comp xterrain in 37x??R15 yet?

well, none of them are designed with streeting in mind, but if you get a radial of any sort then would be better off then the bias,
ssr's or mtr's or the sts's or the claw's even are made with a radial version..

This probly wont help you, but the SX's are the best tire I have ever wheeled on. I love them. I wouldnt use them on a DD though :(

For cost and mileage, Id go 37's radial, for a 38in AT your gonna pay. 37in MTRs can be found as cheep as $160 (discount tires minimum price with a good hookup)

If you have space get a set of 37's for driving then a set of used swampers for play....

It all depends on how bad your gonna rip up your tires off road, if not that much rock rash, jsut get some radial 37's, if alot of rock chunking you might want a thicker side walled tire over the radials like the the TSL adn sacrafice some tire mileage.....

What type of suspension setup do you have now. I would have to say that I would not suggest any 38's for a DD that see miles.

I run 38 TSLs on my daily. I do not drive a long distances normally on it though. Maybe 60 miles a day at most. That may be much for some but I do not mind the ride at all.

33's for DD.... Unless you have thousands of dollars for a gas budget....

Norm

For a DD, I'd go for a set of 37" radials. Getting a set of 38" bias ply's balaced out is nearly impossible. Although some people claim they have nice driving rigs with 38+ rubber which I don't doubt, I have never personally rode or drove one of these. With tires that big and wide, it doesn't take much a imperfection to cause vibration or wander. For the best of both worlds, get a set of radials for the road, and a set of 38" bias for the trails.

I run 38.5 bias tsl's on my DD and I love them. sure they bounce a little in the morning when cold, but the golfballs I put in them take care of most of the balancing at speed. I only drive about 15-20 miles round trip a day and only run 15psi............

Do you know anything about 4 wheel drives? I get 15+ MPG on 38's. I got 16-17 on 33's

Im running on a springover with alcan leafs. When i get the 37/38s ill do the 44044s, and a shcakle reversal. Right now it rides great on chewed 35"SSRs.

How do the claws do offroad? Are they lighter than the swampers?

also, what gears is everyone running with 38s? 5.13s? Ive got a 44 up front and am leary about going lower than 4.88s.

Dont know about weight, but I do know claws have stiff sidewalls. At least new ones do. Glenn got a set and when we ran fordyce we put em to 4 lbs and they still didnt flex a ton. He drove home on 4 lbs fine

I run 4.10's with a t-18 and it does great on the street. I have an atlas so I am still fairly low on the trail. I like higher gears (4.10-4.88) for the streetable factor and gear strength

I would have to agree with Keith. I am doing the same thing. I run 4:10 with a low atlas and 38's. This way if I have to drive somewhere I can get there! I have a few buddies that run the claws and they seem to wear very quickly.

Oh and if you are looking into the 44044 swap. I think it is great. I am running 38.5 with 44044 with a 44 front and 14 bolt rear. You will have to have a wrap bar on the back it is necissary:eek:

those of you running D44s up front, what did you do to them to make them handle the 38s? New shafts, u joints...? Ive got 30 spline inners and 27 spline outers, superwinch locking hubs, and a detroit. Is this enough, or will i have to go stronger?

I have 4.56s with my 38s and tera 4:1 in my t-case (231). I have not done anything special to my D44 up front and it holds well. I guess I am lucky.

Ford 9", but all the same I broke everything in that picture. I am now running Warn alloy inner/outer and CTMs. Hope they hold up or the 9" will be gone. The D44 might hold up if you upgrade to the alloys/CTM combo, otherwise like Keith says, carry lots of spares.

I'm considering the PJ dirt gripz for my DD. Has anyone run these tires? I know they're pricey, but I hear they are a great all-around tire.
I'm starting to think some 37" MTR's might be a good choice for the street and some swampers for the trail...

my PJ's work great on and off the road, sorry to hear yours suck. But when they finally wear out I will probably replace them with the MTR's just for cost alone...and so I can be just like everybody else....:flipoff2:

They last about 10k
Heavy
$$$$
Marginal off-road.

I see no reason to get those unless you are hitting the EJS cruising circut, and want you tread to look mad tite with the PJ, YO!
Go actually wheel the MT/R vs. the PJ..the only place I think the PJ is better is in mud, but mud is really gay, so that is not a concern.

Mud is gay? Tough guys drive in the mud. All you Jeep clowns drive over rocks. What so hard about that. Thats like driving down a residential street.

damn right my tread looks good YO!!! 10k miles? you did get a crap set of tires, my 36's have lasted longer than that and with a spool that is pretty good I thought....I'll let you know about the MT/R's as soon as these run out of tread...anybody wanna swap a half used set of MT/R's with a half used set of PJ's???? :grinpimp:

I have the PJ 38x15.50's and they are GREAT all around tire.... I have had them since Feb and do great and sand, rocks and mud.... NOT THE ULTRA- EXTREME STUFF, but it sounds like he wants an overall good tire....very quiet and VERY streetable.... and yeah they are costly.....

I had 39.5 TSL's and will NEVER go back....unless I start trailering to where I want to go...that doesn't happen too often.

Robert

Yeah, well I am running 38s on Dana 27s front and rear, and have never broken a thing:rolleyes:

The general rule (as I have seen on the trail and on the POR board) is 36" max for a D44 if you want to avoid carnage. anything bigger and the breakage goes up exponetially.

If you don't need custom lengths, go through Drivetrain Direct. Pretty sure they have the best prices, as well as a lifetime warranty. If you need them in custom lengths, go through Currie or Dutchman.

As soon as I put my front driveshaft back together (joint went out on the drive out to CO) I will take you to Carnage and show you how a real jeep does it.
