: Question about a Warn Winch

I just scored a big ass warn winch for a good price. I was looking at it after i got it home and realized that it wont bolt to the bumper that i had intended to put it on. From all the searching i could do i found that all warns have a standard 4.5 x 10 mounting pattern. However this one is 6.5 x 10. The engagement lever is also different than any other i have dealt with. It is not at all like my 9500HSi. My 9500's lever is kinda sticky and clanky. And it only travels 180 degrees. The lever on this big winch will turn a full 360 degrees and it is very very smooth with positive detents in the 12 and 6 o'clock position. Does this sound like a winch that any of you have dealt with? My only experience is with the 8000-9500lb winch category.

On that one pic you can see i placed the controller on top of the gearbox just for an idea of scale. The planetary on this thing is huge!

Does anyone have any experience with a winch like this? Did i post in the wrong forum or something?

it is at least a 12k if not the 15k or 16.5k.

you are measuring the foot patternt and on those three winch's, yes the spread is bigger.

fwiw, dont use the winch like its mounted, it is way to prone to being torn off and fucked up. make sure that it is fully plated and supported from the front, it would e a shame to see a big, good winch wind up looking like a tmaxx or superwinch.

I would get any numbers you could off of it and give Warn a call. They should be able to tell you the details of what you have.

it looks to me like the cable is 5/16, don't they use 3/8 when beyond 10K?

you must have laser eyes to try and tell a 1/16" diam on the pic without a side x side :shaking:

i also for got to tell you, the base/foot has a few hole to work with, take it off the plate and you will see 6 if not 8 mounting holes.

That looks to be 15 or 16.5K. Planetary box looks too big to be a 12K. Just look how tiny the motor is in comparison. You can mount that winch feet down but the mount better be darn beefy....any deflection of the mount could cause the feet to break off.

Edit: And BTW, that cable is spooled on fawking backwards!

the 15 and 16.5 have little fins on the motors

i have a 12 on my truck, it uses a smaller cable than the 15 on my firends

Its going into a big ass Buckstop bumper. That thing is BEEF!

Good to know. I measured where it goes in the bumper and the patter measured 4.5 x 10 inches. Then i measured the distance between the heads of the bolts from the bottom side of that little mount. They measured 6.5 x 10. i havent even had it off the mount yet and looked at the bottom of it.

Yeah the PO told me he used it a couple times for little shit and thought the brake was busted on it. It took him about three months to figure out that the damn cable was backwards.:shaking: But thats alright, it just gives me a really good reason to spool it all out and wind it up good and tight.
