: Rear Dana60 swap?
Chevywhite 02-26-2009, 06:39 PM I have a free DANA60 ff rear axle from a 1979 f250.
Would this be suitable for a fullsize truck. 50/50 road and trail.
I like it for the ground clearance and weight.
The truck im building is not a daily driver but will be driven to the offroad parks and home(hopefully).
A
trkklr77 02-26-2009, 07:04 PM sure, its free.
LegendKiller89 02-26-2009, 07:14 PM Sure, and you got it for the best price of them all.... Free.:smokin:
Davethorik 02-26-2009, 08:07 PM they are still decent ff rearends, have some downsides to 14 bolts but free is a good price. might have to move the spring pads and shock mounts (not to sure on the older ford stuff)), but hey...it was still free.
srv8800 02-26-2009, 08:29 PM i'm runnin the same axle in my k5. it's been great so far and if the 30spl stuff starts lettin go, you can always go 35spl. disk brakes saved me alot of weight. i had to weld on new spring perches and shock mounts.
trkklr77 02-26-2009, 09:13 PM "going" 35spl is extremely expensive, when a 14bff will only cost you $150 and still be twice as strong.
Snowbird13 02-27-2009, 12:36 AM It depends on your ability to weld on new perches, if you need to change the gears to match the front, and if you want to buy a detroit.
BigRed05 02-27-2009, 02:01 AM I agree on it being great as it was free, but in a full size, I am just not a fan of 60s in the rear. At a local pick and pull a 14ff can be had for 70 bucks. Moving spring perches and shock mounts is a breeze, set you pinion angle while your at it. Ruff stuff sells kits with perches, U bolts, u bolt plates, and shock mounts.Sorry about the long drunk post
not a good choice
dont spend $$ on it
trkklr77 02-27-2009, 10:23 AM ie: its free, he is not spending money on it.
ie: its free, he is not spending money on it.
he will spend to put it in and to replace the tiny shafts he is going to break
Red Chevy 03-04-2009, 06:25 PM Just depends on tire size and if u need to regear. I have the same axle in my backyard, but it is going in an s-10. U will have to bore the spinle out for a 35 spline axle, plus the cost of the shafts, plus gears. Then u still won't be as strong as a 14 bolt or d70. Get it and sell it and buy a better axle with the profit. A 14bolt SF would be a better option than that axle.
drycreekjeep 03-05-2009, 02:29 PM trade it for a 14 bolt asap
knaffie 03-06-2009, 01:17 PM I've looked through your posts and you haven't said anything about vehicle weight, tire size, horsepower, driving style, or terrain you're going to wheel on. Without that information, nobody can give you any good advice.
That D60 rear is easily good up to a 37" tire under most rigs for mild wheeling and mild power. Don't let these yahoos sway you into think a 14B is the only axle out there that will work. However, a D60 not a cheap axle to build to be strong. So if it breaks, scrap it and move on.
If its free, I say spend $100 on spring perches, u-bolts, and shock mounts run it as is until it breaks (which it never may). Keep your eyes out for a good deal for something better in the meantime.
