A few of you guys have experience with cummins engine swaps. I've been dreaming of a 3.9BT for the rover (that or a MB 617 - undecided), for some time now. I think it would be a decent match after my axle strength issues are solved.
My understanding is that Timm's done a few of these. Now, there has been talk that Timm's modifications are a touchy subject and I fully understand that he (or others) might not want to let everybody copy his (their) design, since they are the ones who did it first. Please, if I am treading into nasty territory, lemme know. I don't want to piss off anyone. However, the info I'm seeking is really not that technical. The tech I can handle. Í just would like to get some insight into what I'll end up with, before shelling out the big dough.
I would like to get some first hand driving impressions from a 3.9BT cummins rig. Stuff like, is the operating RPM range too narrow to actually be streetable? Any idea on weight? Is the vibration problem as bad as everyone has said, or is it bearable at higher idle speeds? What's the maximum rpm - is it really 2200?
How about fuel consumption? Is it cheap to run?
My dream setup would be a 3.9BT with an advance adapters ranger mating my T-18 to the back of a chevy clutch and bellhousing. I understand most of the "bread truck" mills are mated to SM465's and therefore have chevy type adapters.
The AA case would give me the ranges I need to really motor, and still retain a very respectable crawl ratio. Not to mention, longer front and shorter rear propshafts. Yay!
The benz has a much higher rev limit to it, so I wouldn't need the AA case, just a lot of custom adapters. The cummins is more of an industrial engine, and would be best off-road, I believe. The turbo diesel benz would kick on the highway.
I've also considered the 6ATm but I can't find one and the parts availability worries me. Am I just being a wet towel?
Thanks for all input...
