I've got a '77 Cj-5 with a tired 4.2 and shitty tranny so i wanna swap it for a '93 Dodge 360 with, i think, is a NV4500 and the np241. If it is indeed the 4500 would it work any way? I'm gonna run electric fans so i can move the engine as far up as it can go without interfeering with the shifter. If it is an np435 would that work better, assuming it's a shorter tranny? I just need a little help trying to figure these little issues out. thanks:confused:

theres no way you can fit that in a CJ5 without a ton of work, nv4500s are huge and np241s are longer than a dana20.

I had the same problem as you, 258, t150, dana 20.

my solution is amc 360, sm420, dana 300. cheaper, easier to fit, and better geared.

fawk overdrive, thats for cars and diesels

Is the t-case slip yoke or fixed yoke? If it is slip that will have to be changed because they will pull out but more importantly the slip yoke setup is much shorter. I don't see any other reason that the combo wouldn't work.

yeah, i had already anticipated that i would need a fixed yoke. what do u think of going 360, np435, 241? is the np 435 that much shorter than the 4500, and wouldn't it bolt all together beacuse it was a factoy standard until the 4500

Even with the motor all the way forward your drive shafts going tobe about 4 inches.

To fit a NV4500, Dodge 360, n241 combo in a 5 is going to require you to stretch the rear out to its maximum, Put the motor all the way forward, and move the front end out so it clears the oil pan.
The NV is a tight fit in a wrangler, and thats longer then a 5.

I say pick the whole thing up and sell the np241 and the Nv4500. Use the motor if you can find a bellhousing to work with a 420 or 435 and a d300 or d20 with low range gears.

Just a little info... I have a similar setup in my CJ-7...The maximum you could push your engine forward is about 3-4" without doing some heavy clutch modifications...then in my 7 the rear driveshaft is about 16" and I have the shorter Dana 300 transfer case. Your shorter wheel base might very well be too much of a problem, especially on a lifted vehicle. You will need a CV type driveshaft...if you do any street driving you will need to get a maximum running angle of your driveshaft of about 20 deg. That will be next to impossible with that short of a wheelbase. You would probably have to have your tranny dropped about 4-5". Who wants to do that? You would lose a lot of the ground clearance you gained with a lift.

I don't know about the length of the 435, but if i were you I'd consider something else besides the 4500

Here is what I have found thus far. The 4500 case length is 12.375 with a 6.5"adaptor that also hold 5th gear so it is 18.875 with adaptor. The 435 is 10.875 and the adaptor will be 4-4.5" so we are talking 15.375 or so so that is 3.5-4" of difference. The 4500 does have the smae bolt pattern as the 300 and the same input spline so you could ditch the 241 for a 300.

What front axle are you going with?

Thanks for all the info! Yeah I'm having serious doubts about this whole drivetrain. According to Advanced Adapters noone makes any conversion bellhouseing for the dodge 360. The thing is i can get basically the whole '93 dodge rolling chassis for a really good deal. I'm thinkin i'll just buy the damn thing and turn around and sell it, make some profit and fund somethin' that will work, say.... 350 (carb or FI, depending on price) SM 420 or 465 and my Dana 20. I might keep the full width axles out of the dodge and go full width. Might be a smarter more practical move. Any suggestions for a swap are greatly appretiated, or if anyone is willing to trade drivetrains..( sounds funny, but hey) i might be willing. ;)
