no one is listed as comming in at 5:42
His name isn't in the listing of finishers.

I saw him come across the line while they were jacking off some dude that didn't finish.... no one said anything... then he wasn't named correctly on the blog...

Guess he's just some wheeler that has a 9 to 5 job...... let's talk about how the guys with big name sponsors and budgets didn't finish instead....:mad3:

Wasn't him... I just talked to his Co-Driver.
They timed out at CP3.
They were doing well... bent a rim, and fought it for a while before deciding to change it out. Then just before CP3 they killed the engine and couldn't restart. Their Yellow top was so hot they couldn't touch it for 30 minutes. Carey came by with a blown tranny and gave them a battery. Then they came up on Becca Webster and she told them that CP3 just shut down.

They missed it.

I also heard that after Shannon Campbell DQ'd and went out to race anyway, he was seen driving over rigs that were stuck and overturned. It was a pretty nasty scene, (as I heard second hand).

Was Carey being towed out at that point?
So i guess Dave was just coming back to the pits when I saw him.

Yeah, they passed Carey several times I think. The last time she caught up to them she was being towed and they were stuck on the side of the trail without electricity.

Pat said that when they found out that they were timed out they towed another guy in. I think they got in late...... Dave should be piping in soon.

They were going to run backdoor this morning and come home. They have some great stories but I don't want to steal the thunder.

Now that I think about it, Shannon must not have known that he DQ'd... and that's why he was driving full out.

I also heard that after Shannon Campbell DQ'd and went out to race anyway, he was seen driving over rigs that were stuck and overturned. It was a pretty nasty scene, (as I heard second hand).

That's pretty much what happened. He blew a trany at mm12 or around there, got towed into pit and because that was outside help he got DQ'd, they changed it out and he was about to leave pit, got yelled at by the marshals but went anyway, being on course while DQ'd was supposed to get you a lifetime ban from KOH, so we'll see how that turns out.

Lots of guys got pics and video of him and other racers who were still in the running crawling over the rolled truck on Sledge.

I was bummed, we were on Sledge from about 1:30 until 5:15 and heard the checkpoint at the bottom of Jack and Sledge was closed so we hiked out and went back to camp, never saw the Defender come through either Wrecking Ball or Sledge, really wanted to see it run.:( To have finished at 5:52 he'd have had to have been through Sledge before 5:00 because there was still a short desert section, Sunbonnet and a longer desert section between there and the finish line. Even entering Sledge at 5:00 you'd be lucky to hit the top in under 30 minutes, it was torn to shreds up there, the last 15 buggies that went through all had to pull line to make the water-fall, and it wasn't a bunch of F-toys either.

Either way, I had a great time, didn't have to drink my own beer or eat my own food the whole time, but did manage to bend my .250wall 4130 tie-rod on a 3:00 AM Jeep rescue mission on Claw:shaking: The truck drove like shit on the way home, turned out it's toed out 3* due to the bend, one of these days I'll put a 9" with high-steer on, nah, that'll never work:laughing: At least I settled the argument that .250wall and heims was a bad idea because I'd snap a knuckle before I'd tweek the tie-rod.

Who is this Campbell character? From reading these posts he seems to be KOH's answer to Dick Dastardly.

Does he look like this?

He's last year's winner, and was one of the favorites to win this year. He ran an IFS (the only one?) rig, so a lot of people were watching him to see how well that would do.

Hi Guys,

I'm back. No that was not me finishing the course. :( We ran hard but the battery blowing stopped us in our tracks around mile 39. That was way far out there, and without a spare (who has a spare), we were sol. Then we saw Carey limping the rig back with a blown t-case, she was just ahead of us, she passed us when we got the second flat. She offered the battery to us. THANK YOU. Got in and got rolling again. Drove all of sunbonnet, hells gate and out to the top where we passed four more cars. Thats when we hit Becca in the rock her rig and she told us that we had just barely timed out. We were 5-10 minutes from hitting that check point. Huge, huge bummer.

The worst part about that stupid failure was where we were. According to the trail assist guy we were running in 49th when the battery went. We started 69 so we had made a big move to that point.

We even had a few minutes of glory, passing 5 rigs on Aftershock, one by driving over him. We even took two unlimited buggies through the desert. Man, it must have pissed those guys off.

Overall, I did better than I think anybody thought I would, except for me. I thought we had a real chance to finish. I don't know where we finally stood on distance. The guys running check point three said there were only 45 vehicles that went through there, so I guess that means I get to claim top 50%, right? Probably not. Many of the racetrackers failed.

It was a rush.

As to Shannon Campbell, that clip that is on youtube, when he rammed that guy he blew the shrader valves on his shocks. It cost him what would have been a top 10 finish. He shouldn't have been on the course. Imagine how that guy feels right now. I talked with Campbell that night, he's an extremely nice guy, but what he did was wrong.

But, I am pretty sure I was the only guy who finished the day by towing a competitor back to camp, and then wheeled the whole next day with zero repairs after the race. I'm happy with what I did, I just would kill to see what would have been without the battery issue. I am sure there are a lot of other competitors doing the what if game too.

Thanks so much to Keith at Rovertracks and all my sponsors. I had zero drivetrain failures and I beat the ever loving shit out of that truck. There is a tennis ball section of frame missing. I don't even know when I did it.

And in summary, I beat Shannon Campbell, Tracy Jordan, and Pistol Pete. So take that! :flipoff2:

Very cool that Carey offered her battery, she's a nice person.

Do you think it was the battery's location, or the charge that killed it?

I take your going for Positive-Earth with a generator for next year:laughing:

Awesome dude! Did you guys blow the batt up winching or did vibration just kill it?

This must have been a huge learning curve for you and you did really well.

Something not everyone knows, you can set up the injection pump to have a full manual stop on it, so it does not even need 12V to run. It's very easy and reversible, maybe for next year it might take the 12V-to-engine requirement out of the equation (although I imagine you would need a working winch).

You did all us oilburners proud!

You know, I have no rover wiring in the rig at all. I had no worries about electrical anything. Here's the real sad part, what ended up failing is the part I put in to pass safety. For years I have run a strap over my battery. Works great. But before the race I installed a steel strap race style that goes over the center of the battery with the plastic isolation sleeve. The sleeve slid during the race and allowed the battery to slide and ground the positive. It never happend in practice, of course. It was just such a dumb thing to take me out. I was doing good enough to have delusions of grandure around mile 30.

Awesome dude! Did you guys blow the batt up winching or did vibration just kill it?

Edit: I never winched once. I was bringing it, right up until it was thrown right back in my face. ;)

Man, that sucks. I know nothing anyone says will make it any better, but I think you're way better off having cooked a batt than an engine, suspension etc. I am sure you got to put the rig through one hell of a beating and it looks like it had no issues whatsoever.

ON the VE pump there is one 12V connection, it looks like a screw-in solenoid on the main body of the pump. This is where you send your 12V in order to make the pump deliver fuel. If you unscrew the solenoid (make sure everything is CLEAN around it before you open it up) you will find a little "pill" that is behind the solenoid. The system is nothing more than an electromagnetic coil that pulls the pill away from blocking fuel flow when you send it some power. If you remove the pill, the engine will run without 12V, but then you won't be able to shut it off. On the pump (I think the Rover pump has this as well, but I am not sure and if not it can be easily retrofitted) there should be a mechanical lever type thing that you can use to mechanically shut off fuel flow. You just hook up a bowden cable to it, and you have a pull-to-shut off setup, like any piece of heavy equipment.

If you post a pic of your pump I can tell you if it has the lever or not.

On another related topic, have you guys ever experienced engine runaway on a 300TDI by rolling the truck? I have always worried about the engine running away on engine oil while on its side or top, I've even thought of Halon as a good safety precaution for diesels. Newer diesels are not supposed to be able to do this due to better oil control, but I had a VW diesel runaway one and it was not pretty.

Cool man. I bet it was a hell of a time.

Now that I have a little rest, I can actually go into some detail.

That first 40 miles I had the best time I have ever had in my life. I can remember when we passed our first truck that was broke, about half a mile into the race. My codriver looks at me and says "We can't finish 92!" After that we just started driving and driving hard with nothing to lose. Then we passed Shannon Campbell in the lake bed. We just shook our head, "was that who we thought it was?" By the time we hit the first rock trail we had passed over 20 rigs. Took another 10 through Aftershock. We were doing really well. Thats when I bumped into the rover guys. Tis and Ben and all those guys. I asked them for a spare at pits and they got right on it for me. They were so frekin awesome to run back and do that. I Can't thank them enough. I ended up blowing the battery before then and made them miss the whole race. I feel bad! But I am so thankful for that.

Really, really, great guys. All of them.

strong.

Thank you!

It was the other racers valve. I think his name was Will. It was a shame. But I am not going to cast judgement. When we missed check point three with the truck running great, my first thought was "fuck this stupid ass rule, I'm going for it". Keep in mind there was no time concession for start position on the check points. I was there faster than some racers that got through. But then I quickly calmed down, precicely because I didn't want to ruin someone elses race that had a real chance. My point is, making the right decision is tough. You have so much time and money invested at that point that you make poor decisions. It was wrong, but Campbell is a nice guy and I remain a big fan.

Is there any video footage of you racing?

There is tons. I have no idea where to find it though. I am not a big player, so non of it gets posted. There was a guy filming when I drove over the buggy on Aftershock. I would really like to get that.

On a side note, the closest I came to yardsaleing in the desert was when a cameraman jumped onto the trail. He seriously nearly died and I was on two wheels for a while. Some people in the crowd were dumb. Its fortunate nobody was hurt.

Man, that sucks. I know nothing anyone says will make it any better, but I think you're way better off having cooked a batt than an engine, suspension etc. I am sure you got to put the rig through one hell of a beating and it looks like it had no issues whatsoever.

Thats. I will get you a picture. It would be nice to know how to do it. Would have been nicer last week though! :flipoff2:

I do feel lucky to have the rig in reletively one piece. It would have been bad for me to have major carnage. I blew my wad on the race setup. I am now in need of some financial down time. Total carnage was:

Rear sway bar
Battery
Both spring separators on the passenger side shock
One winch cable
Various smashes

Stupid battery! :(

IMHO you & the Rover did well.
Forget the "what if" game, it won't help.
:)

Nothing helps. But I am not dissapointed. I think I surprised a lot of people.

One thing that has to be said. Eric Holder from Pikes Peak Rovers deserves EPIC credit. Ran the LCQ and passed. Then finished 12th in the race in a single seater that was as bad ass as anything out there. Remarkable rig, nice guy, great driver. Mad props!

Mad props to anyone that raced for that matter.

Great meeting you Dave. I had an awesome time hanging with you, Ben, Tiz, Brandon, Greg and Mike. I'm just sorry that I didn't have enough time to meet everyone.

For those who were thinking of going and didn't, do yourself a favor and GO. The lake-bed was a sea of trailers, killer rigs, and some of the best folks in the sport. I was frickin' amazed every time we came over a hill and saw the CITY that had formed over night. The sickest rigs were everywhere...500hp +, tents, consessions, good moods, and awesome trails. Next year will be even bigger.

And to top it off, when I left the guy's on Tuesday, there wasn't a speck of trash anywhere. Spotless. Very impressive to say the least.

BTW, if you get a chance, have a finished 1/2 gal. vodka bottle, and want to know how to set up the sickest micky-bom ever, Dave is your man! Yes we have video, but I'm not sure if it's on you-tube yet or not. Mikey?

Thanks again for leading us up Jack and Jack North Dave. That was one of the best days (though Wrecking-Ball, Claw and After Shock were pretty darn killer too!).

If you'd quit hacking around with it and send the damned thing to me, I could get it going again in a LOT less time than it's taking you. Hopefully, my new computer will make it that much easier, when I finally receive it.

Didn't do much fixing today, resolved a squeaky rear suspension on a 4.4 for a picky client, but DID sell $500 worth of simple work. Helped out Boheefus over the phone and wasted some time on a lightweight. Monday is crash damage repair day. I love insurance jobs!

I do believe I'll spend the weekend practicing rust repair on Pinocchio. Yep, that's the ticket! The cobbler's son needs some shoes (er, footwells).

It's beer:45, I'm outta here!

D-, Not sure if there is any from me (or my bud Mike) of you on AS. We hung around while you worked around the guy on Depreciation Corner if I recall correctly. Good moves, and we could tell that you were well on your way past the obstacle when we pulled out to go to Back-Door (ie. no reason to take a boring pick of you easily clearing an obstacle).

Dude, w/o sucking your cock too much, I have to say you had it going on. Next time keep your battery hold-down bridge in place, listen to those whom you now trust, and place in the top 10. Keep your head in the right zone and you'll be figuring out what to do with your day job.

Good work man.

Hey,

Don't forget to link that here when it's up. That was the biggest one I have ever seen.

Well, I'm not sure if working the big-one was Brandon's idea or mine....Does that mean that you think Brandon or I was the biggest you've ever seen? :flipoff2:

Killer time had by all, just got back today. Congrats to Dave for a hell of an effort. I think I have pics of you on aftershock. I just need a few days to get dialed in and I'll post pics, and the vid of 'da bomb'.

Dirty Jobs, how long have we known each other, spell my name right or I'm posting pics of you in a G from your body building days:flipoff2:

Saweet! I want pics from those trails! I really appreciate it. It was great meeting you guys. Let me know what you need for the battery. Since it was a short afterall, you may want to try a trickle charge. But I will make sure your taken care of.

Nope, not yours. I have too much respect for you! It was good talking with you. You have a lot of heart, especially to be wheeling the next day! I hope to see you again.

thanks man. back at ya. racing is secondary to having a good time and being a good person. wheeling is what got me into racing and will forever be engrained into my soul. if it'll roll, it can wheel.

Here are some pics of you at the top of Aftershock. That is pretty much the only place I got pics of you other than a video of the desert at mile 7ish, and a couple from our run up Jack. I still plan on posting all my pics on a sharing site soon. I'll let you know about the battery as soon as I get around to it.

Thanks man! I really appriciate it. Anymore and the video would be great. I am putting together a koh folder of sorts. If I can ask one more favor, I would like to get the first and last names of everyone in your group for a writeup of the weekend. I know everyones first name, but only Tisdales last name.

Whatever you need on the battery, consider it done. Thanks!!

You wouldn't believe the trucks I passed. Like I mentioned earlier, after we had passed up about 20 HIGH dollar rigs, I started having delusions of grandure. Didn't end up working out for me though!

I still feel like a lot of people who didn't, respect the Land Rover now! :D

I don't know who you are, but you have no idea what your talking about. There was no qualifying for KOH other than the LCQ which I was never in. You got any other BS you want to try and spread?

This has nothing to do with you Buck, but it was interesting to me that at least one team with impeccable reputation that actually finished last years race was not invited back for this year. There was behind the scenes maneuvering whether people chose to admit it or not.

Dave and Jeff chose everyone that was in the LCQ and everyone that was in the race. It is their race and their decision. Some of the rules they made I had a big problem with (no time consideration on check points). But they get to make the rules. There was no maneuvering behind the scenes because there were no rules for invite. They could not invite you back if they didn't like your hairstyle.
