Why is the steering cylinder not closer to being centered? As far from centered as it is your steering geometry is probably screwed up. Your ackerman angle is going to be WAY off with that setup, and there is probably an appreciable difference in the left/right steering radii.

The cylinder is centered, in it's throw but not on the axle. Please look at the pic again and think about it. It's not rocket surgery.;) :D

Everything 4 link I see on this site has a this "V" shaped setup. My mounts on the frame are about in the same position, but my axle housing mounts are right near the coilover, one on top and one on bottom. Does this "V" shape have more advantages?

Actually, you might want to rethink your reply. BAJG even PM'd me to let me know what was up with this setup, and that he is kind of stuck with that position due to not wanting to put it in front of the differential, and not having enough room to mount the cylinder above the differential. He is going to test the setup to see how noticeable the effects are of having the steering cylinder in that position.

Really you should have read my reply better. What would the ram not being centered in its throw have to do with Ackerman angle? NOTHING. But having different length tie rods going to each steering arm will affect Ackerman angle because the steering arms go front to back as well as side to side through their travel. The really short tie rod on the passenger side is going to go through much more angle change than the long side tie rod.

No, your right, its not rocket science but it is obviously a little bit more complicated than you figured.

Yeah why doesn't some one "in lighten" me , please?

Do you honestly think that with heims at 1 or both ends of the connecting arms (can't tell from the pic) the arcs experienced by the different length rods will matter??? I would buy it making a big difference with just pins, but I don't see how it could cause much problem when heims are incoporated to take up the variance.

Please "in lighten" me if I'm off here :D

I think what he is saying is the measured and at the tierod and ram will be considerably different on each end due to the different length rods. I can buy into that. Question is how much effect that has on the real world function of Robs front end/ackerman angle. We'll know soon enough once Rob picks up his rig. Its full hydro now, so its not like it matters THAT much as its trail only rig now, I think.

with the increased angle on the short* tie-rod, in comparison to
the angle on the long tie-rod, when that thing is steered all the
way to the right, the angle of the short rod is going to be pretty
excessive.

I'll say it here/now:

I bet the ram get's bent on the passsenger side due to the
strong side-load which will be created from the short tie-rod's
excessive angle................

any takers--??

--SOMETHING is gonna give the ghost on the short side.......

rod-ends, ram, the cylnder mount, something.... beware...

PS: you heard it here first...............

I thought that the first time that I saw it as well, just didn't want to say it that way. Go You! hehe Also the shaft selas aren't going to like side loads either. I reccomend to all people that I sell my rams to that the mount them as close as possible to the plane that the steering arms are on. It saves allot of stress on all of the steering components.

My call is that the shaft will bend if left that way, because as I recall the double ended steering cylinders that the Badlands shop uses has a 1" dia. shaft, which I.M.O. is kind of small even with the best geometry.

As I said in my PM to you BAJG, I would move that thing closer to center any way possible before you waste a steering cylinder. What is worse, possibly wasting the cylinder because of rock damage, or definitely wasting it due to design flaw?

Move the cylinder to the center, and build your cylinder mounts with a skid that protects as much of the cylinder as possible.

Wouldn't it suck if you DNF'd a competition because of something that you already knew might be a problem?

If it doesn't seem like it would be that bad, why did you ask?

Here are the steps:

1. Mark where you want to cut.
2. Place saw in hands, and proceed to cut.
3. The end
