Just got an "88" Chevy 1/2 ton v6 4.3l. engine has been rebuilt bored .60 over. reground cam, new crank, larger valves, and bearings. I got this to put the engine in my 92 Yota. But I got a job offer in WA and need to move. Now the question. Do you think I can tow the Yota with this truck? I am replacing the breaks on the truck just in case I need more stopping power but other then that I am lost. Thanks all!

How far is it? Tow bar or trailer?

Its a 1600 mile trip!! Long drive. I am thinking of going with a tow bar to minimize weight. Or using a tow dolly. Trying to figure it out. I was told to get a helper spring to keep it level too.

Personally, I would use a trailer. Sure, it'll weigh more, but it'll pull much better, and you'll have brakes then. Other than that, load it right, and a half ton should do fine with a 'yota. You won't win any races towing in hills with a 4.3, but who gives a fuck?
How much does the yota weigh? I doubt you'll need helper springs.

It should haul it, just gonna be a little slow at times.
My buddy had an s10 with the 4.3 that he hauled a round bale in the bed and 3 more on a trailer for 500 miles and had no problems. Just use your head when towing it and youll be fine.

If you take it easy and not act like an ass, you can definately tow with a half ton. I did it plenty of times... Just use a trailer with brakes.
And 100's of Floridians towing their 22 foot boats with a TJ can't be wrong! :flipoff2:

[Obligatory Pirate response] You'll kill yourself and everyone around you if you don't use an F650 to tow that S10 on a trailer! [/Obligatory Pirate response]

If I wasnt such a cheap ass I'd get that F650!! But then Id have to get a divorce pay child support, and live in it!! Which aint all that bad on some days! Least I can trail ride more.. But that truck sure would be expensive after the lawyers get done with me. And hell she'd probably end up with both the trucks!

Speaking of Floridians,,,

If you want to do it right, put firestone airbags in the back, not spring type "add a leaf" type helpers. The purpose is not so much to keep it level as it is to handle the load and minimize the "bouncing" on the rear that in turn loads and unloads the front and changes braking and steering charistics.
Also do yourself a favor and look at a Load distributing hitch set-up. I think it will pay for it's self with the one trip to a novice tower. :)
Slow and steady wins the race and saves fuel..

We towed once with my buddies V6 Chevy 1/2 ton. 12 hours to Glamis and back ewith 9000 lbs lol. I didn't realize how much of a lack of low end that truck had until he had me back the trailer back into the back yard when we got back! I had to use nearly full throttle just to back into up my driveway and back into the side yard. I was worried a bit about the transmission not having a cooler and I would have installed one but we were in a hurry to leave on our vacation. My buddy did have trans problems within the year but the truck had over 100000 miles so some of that was expected. I did tow about 7000 once with my brothers 95 S-10 Blazer with a V6 and was surprised how peppy the set up felt with a bunch less weight. The check engine light did come on and it was shifting and running a bit rough at times so I think the load was a bit much for the truck but when I got back and took the trailer off the truck was running fine. But a cooler on it and stay out of overdrive.
