: Qualifing for KOH 2010
mark99tj 03-03-2009, 11:56 AM What is everyone's thoughts on the Rausch Creek Qualifier (RCQ)?
I have been watching a lot of what happened at KOH 09. The event is getting bigger and bigger, and with the amount of effort put into getting into the race, the qualifiers will become very important-- there is a set amount of people allowed into the race. As far as I can tell, there are 5 or 6 ways to get into KOH 2010: 1. Be top 10 in KOH 09; 2. Top 10 at RCQ, 3. Top 10 in Vegas to Reno, 4. Top 10 in Pike's Peak (Edit: Land's End), 5. Be a memeber of the OG (original group of racers in the original KOH), 6 through wild card given by the Hammerking guys. Edit: Oh yeah, forgot about 2010 LCQ and sponser exceptions...
So, with that in mind, #1 and #6 is already a forgone conclusion. 3 and 4 will be difficult for a lot of teams on the east coast, as it really lends those qualifiers to the guys who like to eat dust (or at least have the rigs set up to run in the desert-- cooling, pumpers, highspeed experience, etc...).
So that leads me to think that the RCQ is going to be VERY important for a number of teams to gain entry into the 2010 KOH. I mean seriously, who wants to wait for the LCQ that is the day before the KOH? That is a pretty big gamble. If I had a high dollar team that broke at KOH 09 with a new rig I would have to seriously consider the RCQ-- even if I had to drive across country for it. Why? Well, RCQ is in May. KOH 2010 is in February. What better way to get prepped for 2010 than knowing that far in advance that you are in? Really helps in the story to potential sponsers too if you have over half a year to tell your story.
So are teams starting to plan for the next year and the new Qualifications for getting in KOH 2010? Or am I too early since the dust is barely settled at JV and some of the east coast teams may still be on their way home?
Who is coming to Pennsylvania in a few months?????

wngrog 03-03-2009, 12:11 PM Vegas to Reno.....that is an insane race in a rockcrawler. Do you have to finish to qualify? I cant see more than 10 going for that and I damn sure don't see 10 finishing a race that long.

And that goes double for the hillclimb race.

there were a lot of high dollar, new rigs that broke. I am not getting in the middle of anything on the internet (I promised Bruce I would be good!!!). Deep down, I am hoping to see the Blue Torch Fab truck, Jesse's truck and a lot of others at the park. I would be curious to see how an IFS rig does in Rock Creek, but there was more than one IFS rig.
Did you run LCQ? I did not see your name.

From a quick scan in of the results there were 6 people outside of the top 20 from KOH 09 that finished both KOH 08 and KOH 09.
Hobie Smith
Roger Lovell
John James
Eric Anderson
Ian Plaine
Richard Gauthier
There were others that finished both 08 & 09 races but they were in the top 20 in KOH 09 so they've got a secure spot anyway.

You could easily mod a rig between the races, or build an entirely new one..

I'd heard something about that out at the lakebed. My only concern is:
This year, we are not only talking about the great TSCO “Vegas to Reno” but by popular demand the 2009 event will be a THREE-DAY, 1000-MILE STAGED EVENT, and will be called the TSCO “ VEGAS TO RENO” THE LONG WAY!!!

Valid question that I'd like to know the answer to as well. The answer to this question may determine what direction I go with one of my rigs during it's current "rebuild". I have a feeling that there will be far more interested in giving the LCQ a shot in '10 than there were this year and would like to know how the "admission process" will work. I mean, come on, you guys have had 3 days to figure this out already!:grinpimp:
Clayton Off Road Mfg 03-04-2009, 07:33 AM The 2009 KOH race was an amazing event that I am really glad I went to. The LCQ before the main race was a great way to kick off the event and I'm glad to see it coming back next year. Here's a couple good questions that were brought up and I think need to be answered to finalize my plans for KOH 2010.
1) Do you have to run the same "car" (new lingo I learned at KOH, that and wadded up. lol!) in RC qualifier as you run in the KOH race in CA?
2) Will the number of LCQ competitors be limited to a certain number?

As I recall, Lands End qualifies the top 5 drivers. If some of those spots are taken by currently qualified drivers, does it pass through to "top 5 non-qualified drivers?"
If you haven't gotten that far, take your time answering the question. just curious because there could be a lot of spoilers at these events.

Yes, it will be the top x non-qualified drivers. So for example, if JT finishes in the top 5, 6th place will transfer based on JT being an OG.
Or a better example, when Jeff and I finish 1st and 2nd at V2R, we'll transfer down to 12th:flipoff2:
Stephen 03-04-2009, 05:33 PM are we going to race heep speeds at V2R or are KOH vehicles all on their own?
I can tell the doubters about "rock buggies going 1000 miles" that I'd much rather ride in our buggy than some other full on race vehicles that I've ridden in and driven. I'm sure we'll get smoked by the 1600's but those things issue a full beating. And the K5 we worked with was sporting 11" of front travel on a good day with 35" tires. All in all, I'll take the KOH car.

There are lots of details to work out with BITD for this race, but You will not be able to race a Jeepspeed in the KOH class. KOH will be KOH style cars. Rule book will take some time as we will try and make a rule book that will also cover 2010 KOH.
There is already a class for jeepspeeds, there is nothing for unlimited 4wheel drive cars. We are trying to make that happen.

YJgirl 03-04-2009, 10:17 PM Just so that EVERYONE understands about the Lands End Hill Climb race as a qualifyer for the 2010:
I am the Race Director. Any race related information and questions direct them to me. I can accept PM's or email me at val@rockstomper.com or call me at 303-842-0825.
Any technical questions regarding the class, tech inspection, vehicle related questions contact JT Taylor.
JT and I are working on a document that will contain instructions and how-to for the Lands End Hill Climb since the majority of you have never raced in a hill climb event in Colorado. The FULL 2009 rule book for CHCA, which is the sanctioning body for Lands End, will be available by April 2009. I will post up when the rule book is published to the CHCA web site on Pirate, KOH forum, and wherever else applicable. The CHCA web site is www.chcaracing.com.
Regarding how the qualifyer will work: We are in the process of creating a comprehensive document on how to qualify at each event. This will be released shortly by Hammerking Productions and will cover all concerns voiced in this thread and others.
Good luck guys and gals!

And that goes double for the hillclimb race.
What usually keeps team from finishing KOH? Mechanical failures from the length of the race, and abuse they see throughout the course. If you can finish a 1000 mile desert race your shit should to be able to go 100 miles even if there are rocks! I totally see how it relates to KOH as long as were in the same rigs.

I'm sure its because these are places KOH rigs will be running. Dave and Jeff arent goin to have time to have KOH qualifierers. They actually have jobs. This makes perfect sense. Case and point; Joe shmoe wants to be "in" KOH 2010. Joe Schmoe finds a way to compete, he aint got the money, so he finds sponsors. Sponsors and fans adorn his completion of 986 miles from Vegas to Reno, and he has earned it! Negative batman. This question came up when the qualifiers were announced and Jeff and Dave made it clear that for Vegas to Reno you must be in the KOH class in order to qualify for the 2010 KOH race. For Lands End you must be in the rock racer class to qualify for 2010 KOH, even if there are two other truck classes.

Why 'negative?'
Enter a Jeepspeed (to make it easier for you, I'll say Jeepspeed type rig) in the KOH class.
What is the difference between a Jeepspeed car and a KOH car?
There is no definition of a KOH car (as proved by the four bangers and the sixes and the big eights that raced this year.)
I am not talking about some two wheel drive rig here. Some of them are running 9's front and rear. If planned and built right they should be able to be very competitive.
They could also enter in the Rock Racer class at Lands End.
People like to able to identify with the cars in races. Having rigs that resemble production vehicles is a goooooood thing.

Tech Tim 03-05-2009, 11:09 AM Easy Rick took 3rd with his 4 cyl Toy motor in the 2008 KOH. Then he built a new bad-ass buggy for 2009 and could only tie what he did the year before.
Good to see you moved up one Rick, it was hard teasing you about finishing in 4th.... :flipoff2:
iirc he also had a hair dryer on his 2008 KOH car.

Rick, would you run said JS in the KOH next year? If so, bring it.
Broke That 03-05-2009, 11:34 AM Rick, would you run said JS in the KOH next year? If so, bring it.
I'm hoping to get a couple of cars under the NAXJA banner in both races.
(I guess that would be in 'all three races')
:D
There was not a rig on that lakebed I would want to go 1000 miles in. That is why I wondered if they have to finish.
you pussy :flipoff2:
it is over a 3 day period. that is a piece of cake.
there are many KOH rigs that I would choose over a JS in the baja 1000. hell a primary function of my rig is to pre-run the baja 1000 in.
Goatman 03-05-2009, 12:00 PM I see the various points here. In an unlimited race/class anything goes. This year we had a couple of TJ's in the race, and in the LCQ there were Jeeps, Trackers, Broncos, Toyotas and whatever. I can see that it will be a challenge to write rules and define what a "KOH" car is exactly.
It would also be hard to say that you must race the car you qualified in. Why couldn't someone who qualifies at Rausch Creek in May this year not build or race a different car in KOH 2010?
Lot's of stuff to work out........
YJ_and_Corey 03-05-2009, 12:53 PM My team has committed to the 2010 KOH. We would be happy to take a crack at either the Land's End Hill Climb or the LCQ. The car we would use for the hill-climb would be somewhat different then what we would race at the LCQ - as far as drivetrain goes.
We are gonna fire in an app and keep our fingers crossed. Best of luck to everyone that wants in.
Blase 03-05-2009, 02:54 PM Ohh, the naysayers.........:flipoff2: I will throw in my third seat and you can shoot some great pics of me passing, from the inside out!
Let me know!:grinpimp:
Easy.
HELL YA! If the Midget is scared I will ride and shoot pictures/video of what ever you want!!!!
