i pulled my knuclkes off to repack kingpin bearings, when i pulled it apart everything was tight except for front to back movement due to lack of grease but there was no up and down movement, so now that everything is repacked i tried to reassemble it the exact way it came off now i have about 3/16th movement up and down and knuckle isnt tight and more. anyone have any suggestions?

could it be that even though you put everything back the way it came off...........that you might need thicker shims.

do the shims increase the preload or decrease it?

I think I just told you wrong.........I think lesser shims increase pre-load. More shims actually move the bearings away from the pin.
Maybe someone will chime in here shortly

the shims were, I think, for spacers mainly. but you gotta put them back where they came from!! if you screwed up, you may be on your own unless you take it to a suzuki dealer. and then you probably get an idiot who works on suzuki cars. let me check my suzuki dealer service manual to see what it says.
. the kingpins could easily go all the way into the bearings, so I don't see how shims would do anything to preload, but I'm no auto engineer.
. make sure the outer races are all the way seated into the knuckle(if you changed them, and you should have).
. and also, was it tight before you started with the knuckles seals on? and was it loose afterwards before you put the seals back on? those will make a difference and create drag.
. I'll go check my book now.

i got some info, trying to scan it now. damn printer won't scan unless it can print and I'm out of ink. I'm trying another scanner now that ought to work. let you know in a minute.
it's 2 columns of info on setting it and stuff, and that's all there is in reference to it. straight from the suzuki samurai oem service manual.........

ok, so I'm answering myself now I guess, upon rereading this page, I wish I would have highlighted the part near the top of the second column where it says to start with a bunch of shims on each side to LIGHTEN preload.......
. damn, now I guess we'll have to get spring scales to put our axles back together...:rolleyes::smokin:
