: Cut/Lowering the bed in a YJ

I want to lower the bed of my YJ about 5 inches. Gas tank is out, and it is going to be SOA, so I think I'm good on clearance. Rectangular tube rear bumper is welded on, so I'm not afraid to remove the crossmember under the floor. I know I've seen this done in build threads, but couldn't find any.

Does anyone have a link to one of these threads handy? I'd just like to see what others have done before I jump in?

Why would you want to do this mod? not being an ass just wondering what the advantage would be?

If you are going to bag and slam it on 20s, wouldn't a link suspension work a little better?

Putting propane tanks in the bed, and I want them below the top of the fenders so I can put a hard cover across. The latches on the tank rings will sit a little high in the stock bed for that.

Plan is to cut out the floor of the tub where it meets the fenders. I've got the bed and inner fender walls from another Jeep that was getting scrapped. I'll use that to sleeve into the tub and weld the seem of the two fender walls and see if everything is groovy.

The garage I'm borrowing is out of town, so it will be this Sunday or next before I can start cutting. I'll have pictures of everything as I go for anyone interested.

EDIT: 03/29 This is getting put off for now. The owner has his Chevy in his extra bay (his garage).

For those who care, I finally got back to this. I put a 4"x4" under the body so I could cut without hitting the frame. Used a 4.5" wheel and sawzall. I started by cutting out a smaller section of the floor, and worked my way out to the final size. I looked at the extra bed to find the cleanest places to cut. Ended up about 34" front to back. Torched out the crossmember under the bed. I'll finish cutting and grinding the remains of that down next project day.

The back-half I'll use to sleeve in the new lower bed.

Cut the front of the new bed just in front of the two brackets.

Cut the rear just inside of the lip on the support to leave a flat edge.

There is a spot welded bracket on each side of the fender wall that I grinded off real quick. I need to cut the top lip off the new beds fender walls then I can drop it in. A rivet at the top four corners should hold it together to weld the edge. I have an idea for the gap at the front and back to close it up, but I'll see what it looks like before I decide.

I was hoping this thread would stay dead for a few more months. For medical reasons, not much happened in '09. I haven't given up, I just had to stop for a bit. When I get back to this, hopefully in the Spring, I'll get the pics back up of the start-finish along with anything helpful I can contribute.
