: is this detroit still good?
GaJeep94YJ 08-27-2002, 10:25 AM ok here is the deal, a friend of mine that no longer 4wheels her jeep has a full detroit in her D44. she wants an open carrier now. I swapped the carrier out for her and got her detroit. she said it was used when she got it but always worked for her. I drove her jeep and could definately tell it was there.
well when I removed it, I noticed that the carrrier looked like it had the pinion gear ground into it. I could tell it wasn't right b/c even the bolts had the markings in it.
here is a pic of it"

my question is should I be worried about it? it worked just fine in her jeep I could tell it was back there but how long will it hold up? I also don't know if it was rebuilt before she got it, but looking at the bolts and the gear markings that are into the bolts I would say no.
here are some more pics of it:

ps: how does the setup look. .008" BL too!
GaJeep94YJ 08-27-2002, 10:27 AM here is maybe a better picture of just the carrier. notice the ring link notches in it. this is the detroit and not the ring or pinion

ashmanjeepXJ 08-27-2002, 11:10 AM WOW Im trying to figure how that happened. Im guessing the Drivers side shaft had to have broken and the carrier would have had to break loose and shift to the drivers side and then wedge it self into the pinnion.
If the locker works, Id say your larges concern is ballancing, those are some CHUNKS. What knid of RPM's do you think it will see with your driving conditions? daily highway use might Kill your carrier bearings or even worse dammage could happen to your housing.
If you used it for only low rmp off raoding Id take the risk but not for daily driving.
oldjeep 08-27-2002, 11:19 AM The pinion nut fell off and the pinion got sucked in. Pretty common problem. You might want to take the detroit apart just to make sure none of the metal shavings got in there, but otherwise it should be fine.
Here's a pic of the one in my friends jeep

Wow, are you stupid! How the hell does a broken axle shaft allow the carrier to move?

she drove it for a couple yrs like this. I just wanted to make sure before I started driving on it. it does see hwy speeds every day.
I take it your friends is still ok right?
oldjeep 08-27-2002, 11:45 AM Yup, he's still using it with 36 inch swampers. That picture was taken a couple years ago. It used to be his daily driver, but doesn't see as much road use anymore.
GaJeep94YJ 08-27-2002, 11:50 AM cool I appriciate the info.
how does that pattern look to everyone. I actually got that pattern on the first attempt!!!! went off of the old setup measurments and measured the difference with the caliper on the pinion and the carrier and added or subtracted where I needed.
when I put it all together I got that pattern on the first attempt, and it had .008" BL. that was even the measurement written on the side of the ring gear!!!
