Rockstomper Racing Successfully Tests New Prototype Wheel at King of the Hammers
FIRESTONE, CO – March 5, 2009 - The 2009 King of the Hammers race did not disappoint in proving to be one of the toughest off-road races in the United States. 92 competitors started the race, and little by little the field dwindled down to a mere 32 competitors crossing the finish line.
Rockstomper Racing debuted prototype bead lock wheels that allow for a liner and tire combination at the 2009 King of the Hammers race. The prototype wheels featured the standard Rockstomper bead lock on a steel wheel with dual valve stems allowing for an inner and outer tire.
“For the 2008 KOH race I cut 2 tires and destroyed 2 wheels. In fact I finished the race on three 40’s and one 35. This year I wanted to avoid the flat issues I experienced in 2008 and engineered a wheel/tire combination that would allow the race vehicle to continue on a trail regardless of a flat.”, said Scott Ellinger, owner or Rockstomper and driver of record for Rockstomper Racing.
The wheel/tire combination consisted of a 31” truck tire stuffed inside a 42” Super Swamper. Many thought the combination would fail by race mile 23, but not to be underestimated, Ellinger’s fabricated combo held throughout the 2009 KOH race and continues to hold air post race after running multiple trails at the Hammers and in Colorado.
“Rockstomper builds real world parts for real world people. The prototype wheel tire combo tested well, beat the speculation that it would fail, and withheld all types of terrain at race speed. It withstood the toughest, roughest off-road race in the United States, and the beating it took from letting my co-driver drive the buggy on Sledgehammer post KOH. The wheel/tire combo is Rockstomper tested and Rockstomper approved.”, stated Ellinger.
Rockstomper Racing drew the 91st starting position for the 2009 KOH race. “The course was rough from the other 90 competitors starting ahead of us. The shocks and the wheel/tire combo took a beating through the whoops and the rock sections of the course. We had an impact on a rock so hard that it bent a locking ring, but the tire and wheel combo still held air. Even after the impact. We timed out by 5 minutes at check point 4 due to multiple issues we were stuck behind or with prior to check point 4. We were disappointed, but the wheel/tire prototypes withstood the brutal test of the King of the Hammers race.”, said co-driver Valerie Douglas.
The new Rockstomper bead lock wheel that allows liners will be available in June 2009. It will be featured in a 17” rim and have valve stems for both the inner liner/tire and outer tire. The locking ring will be similar to the current Rockstomper bead locks, and will need to be welded on to the steel wheel by the purchaser. Additional details about the wheel can be found at www.rockstomper.com.
