Your help is needed. The Vegas to Reno race is in danger of being cancelled!
BLM has already received 1,600 letters arguing AGAINST Vegas to Reno from the Center for Biological Diversity (CBD) alone!
There are thousands of crew and familites at any given event. If we all send just one letter, we can show how much it means to so many.
I have attached a form letter that just needs to be printed, signed and mailed. Please send this and pass it along so we can save this race.

Highway Vehicle Race

Dear Mr. Williams:

I am writing to you today in support of the 2009 “Vegas to Reno” race being held by the Best in
the Desert Racing Association (BITD). The State of Nevada has a tourist-based economy and
relies on events like this for revenue. Given the current state of our economy, cities and rural
communities in Nevada would be further strained if this event were not allowed to take place as
it has for the past 14 years.

Through careful planning, and through compliance with analytical requirements of the National
Environmental Policy Act (NEPA), BLM and BITD should be able to identify and mitigate any
potential race-related impacts on the environment. The public and stakeholders should also be
able to assist in this process, as many of them know where sensitive resources are located and
how best to align the racecourse to avoid disturbing those resources.

BITD has a history of hosting world class off-road events. Further, BITD has shown a
commitment to preserving and remediating the roads and trails used during those events. There
is no reason to expect that BITD will treat the Vegas to Reno race any differently. As you are
well aware, the Federal Land Policy and Management Act imposes a multiple use mandate on
the BLM. OHV recreation and racing qualify as valid uses of public lands under that mandate.
For this reason and the reasons given above, I hope that you will issue a Special Recreation
Permit for the Vegas to Reno race.

I figured out that when I call the BLM or the FS and I tell them I am from the "Friends of Eldorado" they think I am some greenie tree-hugging Pole Smoker and they are all nice to me! LOL!

Here's what I got straight from the BLM:

She informed me that the CBD submitted a ton of form letters, and that all of those form letters only count as ONE comment. (standard FS and BLM stuff, they DO NOT count votes) Form letters are useless, write a PERSONALISED letter.

I asked her about when the public comment period ends becuase I was told that it if a wrote a letter that is must be post-dated by tomorrow.

She was not sure of the actual deadline for the comment period becuase she JUST started this job :grinpimp: but she is gonna call me back and let me know. If we have a few more days, I will gear up the generator for this.

We gotta post this up in chit-chat.
