Hi there.

Hope someone can help us. We are putting a set of new gears to our old trial car RR Special(build at winter of 1993). Axles are Dana44 from some old Wagoneer. We have ARB lockers F/R and 5.89:1 gears, that have been broken for years, but now it's time to bring this car back to life and we have set of new 5.89 gears laying at our garage just waiting to be installed.

-Is the checking distance for pinion 2.625" (from centerline of ring gear to "head" of the pinion)??

-On the head of pinion there is grinded +1 and after some searching of previous posts I found that it would mean:

2.625" - 0.001" = 2.624" did I figure this out the correct way? Or how it should be done?

And how accurate this +1 is. So that if we instal the pinion to that, is it absolutely the correct place or does this only get us to the neighbourhood

RR Special

Range Rover 3.5l V8
Range Rover 4-speed manual and T-case
Range Rover frame and suspension (both are slightly modified)
Dana 44 axles with ARBs and 5.89 gears
Russian GAZ 69 model body
Jeep power steering+hydraulic cylinder
Tyres= fenders made for 39.5" Swampers (in picture 36/12.5-15")

Now we are buildig new roll cage (bigger tube) and the over hang from rear is cutted of and then we should install the new gears and change new drive shafts plus some little things :D Then it should be ready for Nordic Trial in Denmark (14 of September):p

What? No one is going to chime in on this? Help the guy out!

Jare: in my limited experiance, .001" is pretty much a joke when working with things like rear diff's. That dimension will only get you close, IMHO. (what would I know, I only set up gears that cost thousands of dollars:D ) Set the pinion at that dimension, and run a pattern on them, if its good, then go with it. some manufacturers recommend making changes to pinion shims in .003" increments anyway.

:D Why would I need one:confused:

 Well actually I've been hearing some rumors that there might be couple 6x6 C-303 Volvos for sale in Lapland. Maybe I'll buy one of those :p

Thanks from your reply. I was reading some old posts and got the picture that the only way to get good results is getting pattern and change shims and get pattern and change shims........and after 23 times doing it you are so pissed off about the job that you just bolt it like the way it is at that time and don't matter about the noise:D :D
