: Cheap Shotgun scope
Jeff. 03-06-2009, 03:39 PM This will mount on my 870 or 1187.
Intended use: Turkey gun and slug gun (rifled choke or slug, not barrel). Up to 75 yards with slugs. Primarily a turkey gun, though.
Do I buy...
A) red dot
B) reflex
c) fix power
Any suggestions of any type?
By cheap, I mean $50 or less. I'm willing to try it and see what happens, Money is tight. :D
TJGreg5 03-06-2009, 03:42 PM I have an el cheapo tru-glo red dot on my 870 (turkey gun) and it works well. Have not used it for deer, though I'd feel comfortable out to 75 yds with it.
another Lance 03-06-2009, 04:46 PM I like the looks of this one, mounts between the stock and reciever. keeps your eye level on the rib too so you don't have to change the way you aquire.

I have this on my 10/22. Very nice scope.

What about a mount?
I don't think you can do it for <$50......

you can get Dot's with aa 1100 mount on Ebay all day long for $50 or less
Protecsafari 03-07-2009, 08:01 AM Aimtech mounts place the scope a bit high, so repeat shots are gonna be crappy (for most with average cheek bone faces).
They also rub the receiver, so you'll need to tape it on the inside to minimize wear (Kapton tape works great). Also, bevel the rear most edge of the Weaver rail to a 45 degree angle (the top flat's rear edge- top to widest flare of base rail). This will give clearance for the power ring of a Bushnell Banner 1.5-4.5X scope.
At 1 or 1.5X (depending on which you get), running shots on deer are pretty easy.
The scope runs in shops for around $85, the base 30 and a set of Leupold rifleman aluminum rings another 20. $135, but a decent set up, that's never given me a problem. I've had 3 of those scopes on various deer/turkey rigs, flawless.
You could get a base that attaches to the rib- either get a cantilever or scout style.
Are your guns standard field stock models with vent ribs, deer barrel style with field stocks, or deer barrel w high combs?
If using a vent rib bbl field stock style, you can use your rib for sighting with an Aimtech scope base- as a secondary aiming system- should your optics be damaged or lose battery power.
Aimtech bases sometimes need tweaked beyond the rear rail bevel. Sometimes they don't have their cross slots fully machined.
Over 10 years, maybe 5 purchases, two of them needed a cross slot filed, to accept the ring's cross bolt.
That's crappy stats on quality- easy fix, but still, crappy odds of it needing a fix.
#1 mill bastard file is all you need to "customize" your base for proper function.
I've had no issues with crooked rails, or mis aligned trigger group bolts/threading.
If you use such a base, watch how you tighten the bolts- esp if using the newer plastic trigger housings. Too tight and your trigger will get very heavy.
Degrease and use Loctite on your screws too.
Protecsafari 03-07-2009, 08:08 AM On cheap scopes/mounts:
I see way too many folks going super cheap, coming back to upgrade after a missed opportunity.
Sure some of it isn't gear related, but many times it is.
How much is missing the boss tom or a decent buck worth?
Some folks think it justifies running cheap gear, even when they admit it costs them in the field time and time again.
Insane, the rationalization. Yet some do it over and over.
Of course some folks blast button bucks and jakes with Leupold equipped super fancy latest and greatest rigs all the time.
To each his own.
Jeff. 03-09-2009, 09:15 AM I have plenty of guns that are equipped well enough to do the job (read, I build with high dollar stuff normally). However, I've got an increasing number of shotguns and want one of them to be more or less dedicated, rather than multipurpose. I HIGHLY doubt I will ever use the gun as a slug gun for deer, for hogs, maybe...this will be a 90% turkey gun. And if the setup doesn't hold, then I'll move it onto my HD shotgun for more tacticool looking appeal! Ha!
I have always looked into and liked the Burris Fastfire and the Sureshot, but for this build, a little out of the price range.
I picked up a mount already, I haven't received it yet, but know a friend with the identical mount and it seems just fine for my needs.
I am leaning toward a red dot or a reflex to avoid purchasing rings. Anyone ever use the NcStar products and a heavy recoiler like a shotgun?
Blue Chip 03-09-2009, 09:43 AM I run this on my hog gun - I never get a shot more than 60 yards - but it has been flawless so far. Looking at the $25 price tag - I would say you're in good shape. The bitch of it is - I paid $50. (Sadly - this is now temporarily sitting on the AR so I can at least shoot it.)

Jeff. 03-09-2009, 09:58 AM I've come across that more than once and contemplated it. How is it on recoil? Ever come off zero?
Blue Chip 03-09-2009, 10:45 AM Not really... I usually run 10 rounds or so through the gun before going out. I haven't needed any major adjustments. Put it this way - after 10 rounds and no adjustments - the result would still be the same for the target.
Protecsafari 03-09-2009, 01:58 PM Seen BSA reddots fail on higher recoil rigs (even when properly mounted).
Might be OK on a kid's .22 though.
