: First Gen Pickup buildup
dezrik 03-07-2009, 07:22 PM After 3 years of owning the parked first gen pickup Im ready to start building my trail rig.
I have 2 Parts truck, Ones a 1987 Pickup 22R Carbed engine was completely rebuild and has +/- 500 miles on it. The other being a 1980 SR5 20R + the 1980 Toyota Pickup I want to build up....
Do i want to put the 22R engine in place of my 20R? Are there advantages of 'upgrading' to the 22r??? (dont even suggest putting the 20r head on the 22R, I dont have the money to build the head to get performance out of it).
Do I want to put the in the G52/G54?!? (Not sure which one) from the 87 in my truck?? or should i find a W56??
I have two top shift transfercases and one Forward shift tc, DO i want to put the Forward shift then the Topshift or run two top shifts????
How does the G52/G54???(again don't know which) compare to the W56 as far as Strength??
Can I install the Pinion flange from the 87's IFS Front and install it to my 1980 Front pinion or are they different spined? (To use the driveshafts out of the 87"
TIA, Dezrik :D
toyotatime 03-07-2009, 09:34 PM ide probobly wait for the 20r to crap out before swapin in the 22r assuming the 20r is a good runner.i read in petersons that a w56 is about 30% stronger than a g52 but since you allready got the g52 ide run it.as for setting up duals i coldnt tell ya.
bbagwell 03-08-2009, 01:32 AM No real advantage upgrading to a 22R. You gain about 6 whopping horsepower. You want to run a top shift for the rear case. The only reason I would swap in the 22R is because it has been recently rebuilt. If you swapped the engine you may as well upgrade to the W56 tranny. Read the FAQ's in the Toyota section you will learn much.
Erick561 03-08-2009, 07:58 AM I know for a fact that the wiring is different on a w56 and the sensor looks different as well; I don't know if you can swap the older sensor in.
As for the engine, sell me your head and intake for 50$ + shipping and do the swap :-)
dezrik 03-08-2009, 01:10 PM Are you talking about the Neutral Sensor or the backup sensor??? or neither??

Erick561 03-08-2009, 07:04 PM Can i see a picture of your g52/54?
dezrik 03-09-2009, 02:00 PM Heres the Pictures.
I Don't think its a G54 so it must be a G52 or W56??? unsure

dezrik 03-10-2009, 01:31 PM bump for answers. What Tranny is it....
bbagwell 03-10-2009, 01:42 PM Should be either a G52 or G54. The W56 was only offered in fuel injected trucks from what I have read.
tavis43 03-10-2009, 10:52 PM that looks like a w56 i THINK the G trans did not have removable bellhousings
i would compare to the pics marlin has on there site
dezrik 03-11-2009, 07:07 AM Marlins Tranny tech page isnt avaliable anymore :(
Erick561 03-11-2009, 08:15 AM Dude. The only tranny type without a removable bellhousing is the L series. I honestly don't know what tranny was in my 1979 i bought, but it looks like this.

Tranny has round plug, t case has square plug.
This is my w56, not sure if A,B, or C.

This has a sensor on the tcase and different wiring, etc
dezrik 03-11-2009, 08:59 AM Crap now im even more confused on what transmission i have crap
dezrik 03-11-2009, 07:05 PM Identification:
G52/54 84-88' are twin stick, use a 8 bolt center section, 6 bolt gear t/case pattern, 21 spline output.
G58 89-95' twin stick, 8 bolt center, 9 bolt chain t/case, 26 spline
W56 85-88' (single stick), 89-95' (twin stick), 10 bolt center, 6 bolt t/case, 21 spline
R151F 86 - 87 (turbo only) will have two housings of four bolts each just like a G52, the difference would be the large rubber plug on the bottom of the bellhousing.
IT has to be a W56, Its not a Twin Stick, Single STICK 4L-N-4H-2H. Won't really know till i replace the Engine. My 20R's timing chain is loose as a goose and i don't want to chance breaking a perfectly good head.
bbagwell 03-12-2009, 02:13 AM What the hell are you talking about twin stick???
dezrik 03-12-2009, 03:56 PM it seems that the G52/G54 had Twin sticked (One Stick to control 4x2 and 4x4 and one to Control High and Low, My truck only has 1 Transfer case stick
