: Swapping CJ axles into a YJ?

I have a buddy of mine that has a YJ. He spun then center section on the tubes. He has a set of my axles that he was setting the gears up in that Im not going to use anymore. Thing is mine are a 30/44 wide-trac out of a CJ. I'm pretty sure they will swap in no prob. I have done a SOA on them for use with YJ Springs, So will they just swap straight in? Also the bolt pattern for the wheels is the same for CJ and YJ correct? What about him just swapping the carrier on the front? Are the D30 carriers the same for CJ and YJ 30's? Thanks in advance for any info, Let me know what you think( other than putting 60's and what not under it), He just wants a fix and this seems the quickest way at hand.

A swap from YJ 30/35 to CJ 30/44 would be a slight upgrade anyhow, wouldn't it?

You better measure the center pin spring perch mounts on the axles, compared to the YJ dimensions. CJ's had a narrower then YJ mount locations.

CJ pattern is 5 on 5.5. YJ pattern is 5 on 4.5

A better bolt in swap would be from a 1981 or newer FSJ. Front axle will plop right in with minumum mods. The rear axle will need new perches welded on for keeping it spring under.

CJ widetrack axles are ~56" wide in the front and ~54" in the back. YJ axles are 60" wide.

79 F250 is a easy swap also.

The YJ front axle has the differential on the driver's side; the CJ has it on the passenger side.

X2 that will be your biggest issue, and one that should be fairly obvious...

No. No. And No.
As was said, Cj axles are passengerside drop.
BP is 5 on 5½ (CJ) vs. 5 on 4½ (YJ).
YJ D30 is reverse cut, CJ is standard...pretty sure the carriers dont swap.

OK. Thanks guys. I have never had or driven YJ's and haven't looked his over. More difference than I thought.

I know a guy with a YJ that bolted a D300 to his tranny and did the passenger drop thing with a full-width Dodge axle and cable-shifted twin sticks. Really slick setup.
