: Holy boiling power steering fluid
Lil'John 08-27-2002, 07:46 PM I finally got my steering back together and was giving it a try(standing still)
The PS box was questionable so I wasn't suprised with the lack of assist.
What did suprise me is I boiled the PS pump... it was puking out the filler neck terribly. After letting it cool a day, I popped the top off the pump and found the plastic was melted:eek:
The pump was a "fresh" junkyard pull with no modifications. Is the boiled pump syndrom a case of a bad pump or could the box have played a part in it?
Lil'John 08-28-2002, 09:28 AM Stumped the night crew:D
Anyone have any input?
This is a long shot, but could the no-load oilflow be blocked somehow ? When you're NOT turning the wheel, the oil should circulate trough the steering gear, at low pressure. You could check the return line, and see if it's flowing or not. If it isn't, then the pump has to dump all oil through the internal relief valve, at high pressure. This also creates a lot of heat. Another tell-tale sign of this happening could be a moaning/whining sound, simelar to the sound a PS pump usually makes when turning the wheel while the steer travel is already at its maximum, and against the stops
My $0.02

Lil'John 08-28-2002, 08:49 PM Thanks for the info rdv... makes sence.
The box I am using is in questionable condition so it is possible the low pressure bypass is fubar(glad I'm going to get it rebuilt:p
Your description is almost perfect on what it sounded like:(
Now I need to pull the front of my Cruiser apart... again:( So I can replace the PS pump... not sure how much melted plastic got circulated in the system :p
Oh well, more money into the Cruiser:mad:
heep86 08-28-2002, 09:36 PM i had the same problem when i put a junkjard box on my jeep. i pulled the box back off, and took it apart and there was a ton of shit in it, from sitting with out lines on it. look inside the box, or at least check the fluid that is coming out. also put a cooler on it.
TNScrambler 08-28-2002, 10:10 PM deffinatly put a cooler on it, mine got hot trying to steer 42's....so I added a small tranny cooler and have had no problems yet, plus increased fluid capasity.
10-4,
Justin
dog walker 08-28-2002, 10:19 PM Sounds to me like the pump was just wasted to begin with. Secondly, when first running a dry pump and box, it will almost always get hot and spit fluid out the cap after you shut off the motor (due to all the air in the system. After you get all the air flushed out, you can then fill it up and if the pump is good, will not puke out anymore.
As for the cooler, thats a given, but you should'nt have any problems with it without one under normal street use.
bigjeepinYJ 08-28-2002, 10:34 PM Not to take away from the post..... Where do you run the cooler, and what type do you suggest? Do you need a fan on it? Or just let it air cool.
TNScrambler 08-28-2002, 10:45 PM I put my cooler in front of the radiator in the upper right corner (looking directly at grill). and ran the lines through the grill shell. I bought the smallest transmission cooler that NAPA sold and just let air flow cool mine, and it seems to do fine, with a stock system ( no power assist yet) an auxillary fan shouldn't be needed as if lines are clear and the pump and box are good it should not be that hot. However if/when I go hydrolic assist there will be more heat and I might need the fan.....but I'll wait till then.

Jeff,
It was definately not puking(been there, done that). It was vapor coming out of the filler neck of the pump :p Imagine boiling a full pot of water and having it "puke" all over the stove.... this is what I had going on in my engine bay :D
The pump boiled itself after "attempting" to bleed the steering system.
When I stopped playing with the steering, and was checking some other engine related stuff(with engine running), the pump started howling and then boiled over(kind of cool watching the pump with PS fluid steam coming out of it:D
I've got a cooler(or two) sitting around the garage waiting for me to finish up some other engine bay stuff before I pick one to mount:p (one is a "small" fat one, the other has about twice the surface area)

Have any of you guys bought the conversion fitting for the power steering box and ran steel braided an fitting. They have a 30 cooler in jegs and I would like to use the 6 an fittings. just wondering they show only one size of o ring style converter. I am using a stock YJ box?
