: toyota rear end in a cj7
pitter 08-27-2002, 08:08 PM ok well i looked at some info on this in a 4wheel mag and wanted to know if anyone had done this,
used 2wd drive toy axles for the proper bolt pattern
used a stock 4:10 third 8" 2wd is 7.5"
either housing 58" wms
and got this to work in your jeep. before u ask why? think, can a D35 handle 33's NO, can a toy axle handle 38's YES. there is no comparison.
these axles are dime a dozen and explorer rear ends are expensive.
DozerDan 08-27-2002, 09:34 PM you are 1/2 right.
if my cj info is correct they are 5 on 5.5 bp, toy 2wd is 5on 4.5
you dont want the 7.5 axle you want the 8.4, that is found in 4wd and v6 2wd tacos.
you can get the 4wd one with stock 4.56 gears.
I have a toy 4wd axle with 4.56 gears and a noslip in mine. i made a custom skid for it and love it. I plan to put wither a d44 up front and keep the 6 on 5.5 or get some shafts from a 2wdv6 and keep the 5 on 4.5
any way they are 60" wide, unless you get an 8" (current trd and older toys) the 85 and newer axles are 58" and the 85 and older are 55"
you will need an adapter for the ds (i got mine from jess at high angle) and some brake adapeter. I just took a peice of hardline and put a jeep nut and a toy nut on it, works great.
Anything else?
pitter 08-27-2002, 10:51 PM ok well i thaught that if u used a 86 4wd housing and put 86 2wd axles in it, then u would have the right bolt pattern for the jeep front axle. but this isn't the case u need a taco axle
Taso Stambolis 08-28-2002, 12:16 AM How close are Toyota axles to YJ axles in width? can the 2wd shafts handle big meats the same as the 4x shafts?
DozerDan 08-28-2002, 09:40 AM yj axles are like 61 or somthing i think, the taco is 60"
I would not use a 2wd taco axle unless it came from a v6. the v62wd is hte same (8.4) axle as the 4wd. but the 2wd v6 has the 5 on 4.5 (jeep yj/tj/xj) lug pattern where as the 4wd has 6 on 5.5.
I beat the snot out of my taco axle the last few times i was out and it help up great.

What is the widest toyota axle? I think a waggy D44 front and a yota rear. I think the D44 is 63"
DozerDan 08-28-2002, 06:50 PM 60 FAWKING INCHES :flipoff2: read the post man, i said it like 3 times, gave all the years and widths...
a front waggy 44 is more like 61" that puts them within an INCH of each other.
:D
Taso Stambolis 08-28-2002, 07:01 PM tanks! :D. One more Q: If I got an axle with 3.55s and put in 2wd shafts for now(to match the D30) and put it in, is a locker the same for 3.55s as it would be for 4.56s or 4.88s? thanks
DozerDan 08-28-2002, 07:37 PM Sorry i dont know the carrier breaks off hand. Um do a search in the yota board there is a bunch of stuff about toy axles in jeeps (lots of it mine) i used to have the link to a good site but lost it when my comptuer barfed.
remeber though only the v62wd axles will fit in the 4wd axle, the 4cyl 2wd's are a diff axle, diff spline count etc
Roguedude 08-29-2002, 01:05 AM I saw an old flatty with front and rear toy axles last year, the owner said he had them for a while and never had any problems with them, then again the heep was only on 33's.
cord318 08-30-2002, 01:03 PM I'm using a 58" Housing on my TJ. My D44 was 60.5(if i remember right). I just run 2.5" BS on the rear and 3.75 up front. I'm using a HI-Pinion E-Locker 3rd out of a 96 Cruzah.

SCRAMBLR 08-30-2002, 07:23 PM I run 85 toy axles front and back in my scrambler. Stock 4.10s a spool in the rear and 35s. This is my daily driver. I never had any problems with them and I wheel them hard. The weekest part was the birfield which a guy named Bobby Long found a cure for. There are no carrier breaks in the older toy axles, I don't know about the taco ones.
