I have a 94 LT1 motor I am swapping into my FJ40. I have been told that there is an available port for an engine temp sensor on the right rear head. There are 2 holes in the head where a bracket was fixed in the original vehicle. Does the temp sensor need to contact the coolant or can it sit dry in the head? Thanks in advance

Small block Chevy heads are interchangeable left to right. On most heads there is a 3/8 or 1/2 NPT port between the #1(8) and #3(6) spark plugs that is in the water passage. I have never seen an LT1 head, so not sure if they have the same holes. Because of the reverse flow cooling system on the LT1 there are some differences from the normal SBC. For normal operation of the temp gauge, you want the sender in the water.

The computer uses the sensor to set mixture and trigger cold start up mode. Yes it need to touch the coolant.
