: "Purist" Jeep Jeep Buildup

I'm wondering.

If you could build a Jeep, from scratch, using ONLY Jeep parts, what would you use?

I'm thinking about starting a new "offroader" project, using a CJ6 frame that I found for 100 bucks. Sticking with the only Jeep parts guidelines, what would you use? The goal is to run 38's, and it be a "rockcrawler".

Here's what I thought.

CJ6 Frame
Dana 60 rear out of a Fullsize Wagoneer
Dana 44 front out of the same Wagoneer (Yea, it's only a 44, with 38's, yikes!)
AMC 360 or 401?
T18 Tranny (Is there any better?)
Dana300 T-case

What do you guys think? Can it be done?

yes.. i have pretty much a purist jeep also..
yj frame & body...
cj front clip..
D60 5 lug from a 73 J-10
D44 5 lug from 78 Wagoneer...(ford hubs)
401/T18/D20
and some other things for the purist..
engine bay color matches body color...
under the fenders also match body color..
body color=Krylon Pumpkin Orange..
everything else is hammerite blue..

for your d60's you should look into the jeep 3/4 & 1 ton trucks.. wagoneers never had them..

A Jeep is only as good as the ford, dodge and chevy parts that you swap in

well i have never seen a jeep with a 455 in it nor a sm420. i read something about his flatty a few years ago and he seemed to find excuses as to why he used those items and they really wern't jeep products. still a nice flatty. i guess he changed his ways cause his new jeep doesn't use much JEEP at all.

Rick Pewe's Jeep?
First off its a FORD GPW so while a flatfender certainly not a Jeep in the strictest sense.

He runs a Buick 455 for a motor.
Hardly a jeep motor at all.

Then the tranny is a SM420.
Yet again not a Jeep tranny.

Pewe is way cool and has forgotten more about Jeeps than most of us know. But I would hardly call his GPW a Jeep purist rig.
A kick ass wheeling rig that has been beat to near death on some of the best trails in the country. Yeah I would buy that.

Building a Jeep Purist rig that isn't intended as a restro rig in my eye's is passing up lots of good parts. I mean all the axles came from Dana. What does it matter what rig they originally came under. I say build what you want. But don't knock yourself out looking for a Jeep part that AMC just bought from GM in the first place.

Just my two cents.......

did the same thing....

started with a cj-6 frame, and happened to have a rolled and totalled cherokee at my disposal.

course, the website has been updated in a year, but it really has turned into a real bastard.

I have a ford/chevy mixed parts 44 front axle, scout 44 in the rear 5.13 gears YJ TJ CJ XJ parts

HAHAHA yep! hell, find a D70 rear and a D60 front (skip the close knuckle) then claim that they were used in tne M715 so its close enough

Of course you are going to say that, hardly anything on your rig is Jeep

What do you mean hardy anything on my Jeep is Jeep?

Lets see the factory tub says JOOP
But 9/10ths of it was replaced due to rust.
The frame has as much aftermarket metal as it does factory.
The motor was long ago replaced with a Chevy
Same with tranny
Axles both came out of the front of Ford 1 tons
Gas tank was custom built.......

The grill and hood are about the only things untouched. Of coourse the hood is wasted. So I guess just the grill.

Oh never mind. It looks like a Jeep.

But at one time it did sport a 360, T176, Dana 300, with Jeep axles. But I grew out of that phase.

Besides, look at what went in jeeps.. mine came stock with a GM motor and GM transmission. Later models came with GM power steering and brakes. Most of the jeep trucks came with the same axles GM trucks came with (my wagoneer 44 front being pretty much interchangable cept for the width). And the bellhousing used to tie my 231 to my sm420 is a stock jeep bellhousing. Take the best stuff you can find/get and build it. They were half every other manufacturer right from the factory to begin with.

Now isn't the M35 made by Kaiser/Jeep?
If you want to stick with jeep parts, skip the 44s and 60s, go right to 2.5 ton Rockwells

Well, Jeep is now owned by Dimlier/Chrysler, so why would you want some antique engine? Go with the 5.9 Magnum and it's port injection or a 4.7. I like the 4.7 stroker, still all Jeep parts. Dump the carb and poor oiling, get modern!
