i did the same with mine and my stock steering pump wore out quickly(less than a year) and i installed a psc pump and it worked perfect.its a good idea to plumb in a 20.00 dollar cooler when you do the pump swap.hope this helps

Pull off the high pressure line from the pump, and pull the plunger thingy outta there.

Also, swap pulleys for one that is smaller, and spins faster.

Is there any info on swapping a P-pump in the L 4.0 to replace the TC pump?

I've tried looking for a P-can swap onto a 4.0, but found zero. I drilled my stock pump out after removing the plunger, and it works great, but I know it will grenade at some point. Running a redneck ram, and I agree that the external cooler is the way to go. It gaurantees the volume needed without cavitation. I picked up almost 2 qts.

PSC sells a p-pump conversion for the 4.0L I had it , not sure if they still do.

I have everything but a good way to mount the pump. I have an AGR super pump (3 GPM) in there now and they sent me a new P-pump that puts out 4.75 GPM with the new box and cylinder. I called them back today and was recommended to just dill out my old TC pump .180. I already have an inline tranny cooler on the system too. I saw the PSC bracket for like $40, but they say you still need to get a new pulley, belt and find a way to adjust the tension on it. I tied to use the brackets off a 258 and it looked like it would work until I had tried to put it on the 242 HO 4.0L. The intakes are different and pushed the pulley to for out of line. If you guys find any info on it or write ups, let me know here or on Norakor.com.

Thanks

You must go to www.westtexasoffroad.com. Go to TECH,
It gives you exact step by step instructions how to modify your stock pump to produce more pressure & more flow at low RPMs.

I did this mod last week, you need a 5/32 drill bit..
And a drill press makes it easier. Follow their directions, and another important thing is to use ROYAL PURPLE Full Synthetic steering fluid.

The other option is to buy a WJ 99-03 Grand Cherokee V8 power steering pump, which I read bolts up to some other Jeeps with a 4.0... But check before going this route. The above Mod is the best & free option.

Don't do this... Do the west Texas mod.

Is the west texas mod still doable on my 98 stock cherokee pump, or just on the older pumps?
