I just found this early 70's 1310 at a boneyard. Has 2bl 8 & 4sp. D70s F&R. Powerlock rear & warn hubs front. PTO off trans for pump for rear 8' dumpbed. PTO off 205 for front Ramsey winch. Cantilever electric hoist 1000# cap for lifting shit in bed. 7 1/2 foot snowplow in bed. 4 almost new rear tires and 2 fronts in good shape. 3 new rims. Cab rusty, but doors close solid. In the process of trying to by from boneyard. Right now says he will sell me all but cab for legal purposes. Talking around 600 bucks. Won't give me vin#. If I buy this minus cab or with it what are my possible options for obtaining some vin?

Sound like BS to me. Ask to see the title.

I've never heard of selling all but the cab "for legal purposes." Most junkyards will sell you any complete junker.. but it's usually up to you to get a title (salvage or otherwise) to go with the vehicle.

The yard won't budge, will let me have all but the actual cab itself. I can gut it, but they insist on pulling the shell off. They will not give me a vin or title. Just against their policy to sell a whole vehicle. They are a huge self service yard, probably crushing 50 or more vehicles a day and are doing this as a favor to me with predjuduce. They usually won't sell anything but parts. I don't know what to do, right now I am thinking with my little head and about what I want, and not about what is smartest. I could store this for a few months in a buddys industrial yard, but finding a solid cab could be a challange here in Chicago. There is so much cool shit on this rig I just hate to let it go, but .......Well I need some cooler heads to straighten me out and give me some perspective.

It sounds like there is no paperwork on it. If they are not selling the cab it must be for illegal purposes. If I have a vehicle here without a title or release of ownership I cannot sell the body, but I do not take anything in that does not have a release of ownership. Buy the chassis and find a cab for it.

hmmm...
buy the chassis.... then have a buddy come in and buy the cab!!!!
at least here (WA), the when you start taking things appart, no one is sure what the vin is associated with.
Local scrap yard requires non-tittled vehicles to be cut into 4 quarters, however, I can scrap a PU cab with out cutting it up (off the frame ect), haven't tried scapping a frame, they are easy to cut into pieces.
So they *should* be able to sell the cab seperate, from the chassis, and visa-versa...
no there is no "selling the whole vehicle", becasue its two seperate trasactions.
Is the cab solid or a POS?? If its solid, try to do the above, if its trashed, see if they will cut the cab in half or somthing. That way you can strip it at your lesure and transfer parts to a new cab, and don't have to sit in a yard for a couple days stripping it, then to find out you left the rare, hard to find part in it that your new cab doesn't have....
As for paper work... find a replacement cab on a complete $100 truck, and (no I never said this) swap vins around. Truthfully, the States *really* don't care about older vehicles, and they know the vin swapping happens all the time do to lost tittles etc..
technicaly, however, it *is* illegal....
good luck, sounds like a killer rig!
