i am in the process of removing the computer from my 89, just wondering who has done this and what they did about the ignition wiring, there are some wires that run from the ignition module to the computer. anyone done this and what did you do? thinking of wiring it just like a early cj

If it's fuel injected it won't work. You have to have the computer to run it. At least that's my understanding. The computer uses the info from all the sensors to determine the "best" operating parameters, such as your fuel/air mix and your timing curve. It might help to know what it is your working on as well.

. . . thinking of wiring it just like a early cj
Why?!
1989 What? Im assuming an XJ.
Is it not running? Won't start? Even that you have a Renix controlled system, Its a hell of alot better then going to Carb.

Get on NAXJA.org if it is an xj and talk to a guy with the username 5-90. He knows more about the electronics of a heep than you can imagine...But no, it will not work anyways, unless you put an HEI distributer on and a carb ...which would be stupid.:shaking:

Sorry for the confusion, it's a 1989 yj with the computer controlled carb.

I did this to my "90" 4.2L, but only after the Nutter bypass.
It worked out well for me, I removed the comp & all it's wiring on the inside of the firewall. I researched what would still work, after the nutter.
Then I carefully followed each wire out, & removed only the unused wires.
I want to warn you right now, not to cut the resistor wire in the large plastic loom. You'll need this if you decide to run the E-core coil.
This wire has different looking coating & may be marked "do not cut".
Don't just cut wires randomly! You need to be pretty sure about which ones your going to cut.
Really, you could just pull the comp & leave all the wires in place.
This would ensure no needed wires were cut.
There are a lot of wires that can come out, but it's risky & they don't add much weight to your jeep.
