I just bought this 1990 HZJ80! Got it for a good price at least! The engine runs great and the transmission is strong the rest, well, at least it is mostly there!

I am an American who lives in West Africa, so getting some parts might take a while, but I am patient and in no hurry. As I said this is my first "iron pig," so I am not all that sure about model types and names, but I believe it is an "HZ" J80 because it has the 4.2L deisel engine (natrually asperated) that Toyota calles 1HZ.

Iron Pigs are FJ55s.
Good luck with the project!

Ranger,

Thanks! I won't make that mistake again. Mt. Home! My wife's family all lives in that area. I sure do like that part of the country.

After a week of work, we have come a long way and she drives great now! We still have a long way to go, but at least I did drive her down the highway today.

New breaks (everything)
New wheel bearings
Shocks (I just got used ones while I am waiting on an OME 2" lift)
New tires (MRF 14 ply 16" 7.50)

I found some newer springs! They made a big difference. I can't wait to get that OME lift kit now.

I took the cruiser to the paint and body shop yesterday! They are going to put in a new floor pan and rocker panels and paint it silver and black. It should look a whole lot better in about two weeks.:D

Barn doors and a 1hz, I have had a few of those motors and they are the poop.

Turned out really nice, those engines do well with turbos but will last a lot longer without one.

I heard a 1hz in Oz that turned a million K a couple years ago, cannot imagine how many miles are on it today..

No turbo on this one! I have no idea how many K are on it. The dash says 250k but I have my doubts about that.

In the future I would like to do a complete overhaul and add a turbo. My brother-in-law in Canada is a top notch diesel man. I'm going to get him over here with his tools and have the parts shipped in and then we can get it all done right.

While I'm waiting for that though, I have a lot of projects that I can work on here.

I am thinking about rear disk breaks. Has anyone had any experience with this? Is it worth the time and effort? What kit should I avoid? Does anyone recommend a kit that they have installed and works well for them?
