I just have to ask if it has been done yet. I am building something new and a little lighter....ok...a hell of a lot lighter. I really want portals on the new rig. So....has it been done yet?
The axles would be a little wide, though I was thinking that running the stock 16" wheels with 38x11 boggers would be a bit different. I have always wanted to try a set of those tires anyways.
Anyone have any thoughts on this?

I have only seen the Mercedes MOG axles, and VW transporter portals (tho' only discussed as an add-on to a solid axle, not pre-built or even actually added on) so what are you talking about? Please elaborate....got pics? links?

Sorry about that....
I am refering to the volvo C303 and C304 axles they are a lighter and smaller than a mog axle. That is one reason I think they would be great on a sami.

personally i think if someone with some machining abilities and a desire to do it could make a portal axle out of a sami axle it would be the bomb !!!
say with a 2:1 geared hub, you'd have 1/2 the stress/torque going through stock zuke components. This alone could mean at least 35s on mostly stock parts....
Ground clearance......
Hmmmm what else....
an interesting idea..... but in the mean time ill work on rebuilding my toy axles

But I ran across this a while back:
Volvo Tranny/T-case mod (http://www.suzuki-samurai.nl/volvo/volvo-eng.html)
looks a bit rough, but I figure it might work well. I dont think that trans is available here in the states, though I could be mistaken.

That is Ron's compitition rig, he is the owner of Offroad General Store, and a really nice guy. I try to buy all my non-Suzuki stuff from him.
I suggest you look into the price of those axles before you get to carried away with your plans. They are really expensive. But then again, they are brand new. Maybe you'll get lucky and find some used ones somewhere overseas? Don't think they ever made it into the US market though.
Ron seems to like the axles alot. He had some custom rims built up for the axles also. So you might need to add that to the equation also.
Another interesting thing is his tires. He has some Baja Claws that are made from soft rubber. They are not DOT approved, and super soft. Probably get about 2 years of trail use out of them as long as he trailers the rig everywhere and doesn't wheel much. He really likes the tires.

I saw Suzuki High Roof with Volvo portals alredy at 1995 when we were in Nordic Trial in Norway. So it's no new thing but that car was not so well built. So if you make it...make it good:D My friend here in Finland jut bought set of Volvo axles and he has been thinking to put them to his Zuki at next winter. You can contact him if you want to. Weight:
3-piece mog front axle is about 300-350kg
1-piece mog front axle (narrow from 411) 240kg
Volvo C-303 front axle ~180kg (rear axle is 155kg without oils)
Toyota Land Cruiser 60 series front 135kg
Jeep Wagoneer Dana 44 from mid 70 145kg
Width I don't know, but there is at least two different widht in mog axles.
