Yes, I've been using the http://www.pirate4x4.com/forum/images/top_search.gif button, but I can't seem to find what I want, and I'm under a time constraint right now.

I have a 1980 CJ-7 with a blown 904 Auto tranny. I'm trying ot switch to a standard, but I'm getting differing information.

The T-4 & T-5 i'm told, are weak transmissions which probably won't hold up turning my 33"s, let alone 35"s when I upgrade next year.

The AX-15's are stronger, but It'll cost me $1000 total once I get the adapter kit to bolt my dana 300 to it.

So, really, are the T-4 & T-5s really not going to hold up?

It's a daily driver, I've never done any HARDCORE wheeling like your selver, as the rest of the d-train is completely stock.

I have an oppertunity to get T-5 tonight, but Is is worth it?

The T4 or T5 will probably be enough to handle up to 35's but anything over that it probably wont be able to handle. Also its nice to having an overdrive especially with lower gears.

Thanks.
As long as I get my Daily drive back into running condition, I don't mind pulling it off the road in 6 mos for a "planned" rebuild.

I'll re-bearing, check-out "second & third" gears for the recall, etc. then.

Either of those will do fine... depending on how you drive..
90% of breaks and whatnot all go back to the drivers driving style...
Go fer it, specially if in 6 months your gonna rebuild.. why spend the extra dough now when u gonna spend more in the future newaz...
IVe seen both of these tranny's on vehicles with 38+ and be just fine, on the otehr hand seen em on stockies that are trashed..

The " adapter" is just a spacer unless you get a clocking ring which is only $160

t-5's are junk. it doesnt take hardcore wheeling to blow one up. I know several people who have, none of them running larger than 35"s.

dont fawk around with a temp solution for a drivetrain. you'll end up being nickle and dimed to death twice.

throw in a 4 speed. if your auto did fine with no over drive, a manual will work. I dont know about where your from, but around here, anything out of a jeep seems to get top dollar. you'd end up spending more for a jeep T5 than a np435 and adapter.

Check out a T18, that might be worth your while. Granny Low, Strong as hell, and still daily driveable. :D

I trashed 3 T-5's within a couple of years w/ 33's. Get a heavier trans, or be prepared to spend twice a much money.

Yeah, don't waste your money on a T-5. You'll just end up having to swap it out for something stronger sooner or later. Definitely T-18.
