Hey guys, I am in college in the technology education program.. one of my classes requires some field work with an after school program. I signed up to help a local school with their "pride" car to drive around the school grounds during games and what not. Its quite the abomination of a thing... my most hated vehicle, a Trar.. 87 Camero on a shortened 87 Chevy pick up frame.

The car has been sitting here for about one year and not getting anywhere. The body is just mocked above the frame and they need to be connected. This might be my ignorance on metal/fabrication but the host teacher will not allow any welding to the actual frame, everything must be bolted. (industry standard for modifying a vehicle frame he says) So I need to help the students actually get this thing going. I want to have the frame and body connected by the time I leave.

So far all the suspension is off of the camero, so the host teacher's idea was to bolt plates off of the camero's stock suspension locations and with some type of angle iron, tubing, and connect it to a bolt on frame plate. Is there any recommendations or "less redneck" ideas that you've seen? I am thinking sandwiching the frame w/ the plates, and using some 2" DOM tubing much like tieing a frame to a roll cage. I will have pictures soon, just thought I would ask your opinions first. and of course feel free to flame away. i hate the idea as much as the next guy! :D

Why don't you bring him an upfitter's guide which shows proper procedure for frame modifications with welding. If that does not convince him, then you will be dealing with a close- minded asshole... and you will simply encounter bigger problems with him. Find another project if this is the case.

Sounds more like industrial arts to me....and are you working in a shop or a lab? Haha, just a lil ribbing from a fellow tech. ed student here. Where do you go to school at? I'm at California University of Pennsylvania.

As for the camaro i would suggest using the subframe, tie them together and go from there. or build a subframe out of tube and tie that into the frame....

You could weld a structure onto the truck frame that bolts to where the subframe would go on the car.... If he would compromise at that. Or build a structure that would bolt between the camaros stock sub frame mounting locations and bolt to the truck frame. It sounds like a terrible idea to start with about as bad as the guy who put a minivan on a truck frame.

i am at CCSU, central connecticut state university, and yeah its an auto lab class part of their tech ed program. He is an old guy from the industry. He used to own a emergency vehicle manufacture company ie ambulances, firetrucks things like that. So he went into this big speal about how he says http://www.quigley4x4.com/pages/index.cfm?upID=43 does not weld any frames between the suspension components and how ford has this big booklet on not welding between suspension components only after them are you allowed to weld....:eek:sooooo thats pretty damn annoying. But the kids seem excited about me being there, and im gonna just try to get something going for them with what i have to work with...
