pitter 08-29-2002, 01:03 AM trail rig, front ARB, rear spool or ARB
street front and rear ARB
rebelcj7 08-29-2002, 01:14 AM ok but what bout gearing?
YJ4RoX 08-29-2002, 05:45 AM Spool rear, detroit front.
Standard rotation D44 goes down to 5.89, reverse cut goes down to 5.13, possibly 5.38, cant remember.
If you have the cash, buy some warns & CTM's
I run 5.38's in standard rotation D44's and 36 Tsl's on a 4 banger. Runs great.
4Bangler 08-29-2002, 06:45 AM I'm running 5.38 in my Dana 44 front with an OX, my 9" rear has a spool and I love it, I still drive on the street once in a while with 35" MT/R's, a SM420, and a 4 cyl, no problem, but highway RPM would be nasty with a V8. I went low pinion on the front because I wanted 5.38's, but now they are offering them for reverse cut, so I may go high pinion on my next custom width Dana 44.
BlueYJ 08-29-2002, 03:15 PM with the set-up you have I wouldnt go lower then 4.88's. The torque converter and horse power are in your favor. Plus you will be able to get down the highway without the engine reving at 4k.
I dont know what your gear ratio is in your t400 or your 20 but final with an auto works real well between 45-55:1. I am 55:1 and it kicks ass, Im running TF999 (with lock-up torque converter) 4:1 kit and 4.88's. I have 36's and at 3K rpm not using the 4th gear I am only doing 60 miles an hour.
I have a detroit in my rear 9", with an auto and very rarely does it disingage now. The spool for a mostly street rig IMO sucks. You will wear tires out real quickly.
I would have a ARB front so you can turn it on and off only when you need it. If you have dual ARB's and your air source takes a crap you have nothing. At least with a rear locker you can get out of most situations.
my .02 cents worth

66CJdean 08-29-2002, 04:20 PM Even if the air goes away so what IMO. I only turn them on a few times a weekend. If you are going to go through the trouble of installing the compressor for the front I say hook them both up and have the best of both worlds. An ARB is only $100 more than a Detroit but I prefer a spool over the Detroit at least for the rear of course.
With the 400 I would run nothing taller than 4.88's and would probably run 4.56's if you are running 35's
P&T Jeeps 08-29-2002, 05:37 PM I'd have to agree w/ 66 on all fronts there! I'd have to say w/ the lower gear though you'll always end up w/ bigger meats somehow...:flipoff2:
moveaside 08-29-2002, 06:29 PM go 4.88 something selectable up front and spool the rear.
Jakesteramalamajama 08-30-2002, 04:32 AM I'm running 4.27 gears with Ox lockers front and rear. You can get away with a little lower numeric ratio R&P if you've got a V-8 under the hood. Low tranny and transfer case gears can take care of off-road gearing and you still can get some decent mileage on-road in case you wrapped your other car around a tree last winter and have to drive the Heep to work every day (like I did, and do) :flipoff2:

Good to see you can recommend a gear when you have 30" ATs  :flipoff2:
I had 4.88s with 36's and an auto tranny. It did well but with your power plant I'd say 4.56 would be sufficient.
River Beast 08-30-2002, 10:47 AM I have 4.89's with detroits front and rear in my 44's with 38's...with my 360 it does really good for a full size...but they didn't take the stress (I knew they wouldn't in the long run) and I tweaked the housings.
I am upgrading to 14FF and D60 in a few months...
the 4.89 is a good gear even with only 9 teeth on the pinion.... they do heat up pretty good though...
go with 4.89's
rebelcj7 08-30-2002, 10:55 AM Thanks for ya'll input, looks like once i gear and lock it, i wont drive much on the road anyways.. so prolly go spool rear, arb up front..
and as for gears, still debating, 4.88 or 5.13... being that the 400 turbo's first gears isnt too low and the d20 t case gears suck (might go tera low)...
we will see though.. thanks all..
