: MA-oversand permits
strokedbronco 03-23-2009, 02:27 AM Looking for people who have oversand experience in MA.
I have been going to Race Point for years. I'm a fan of the trails/beach conditions but I'd like to find some place a little closer to home.
With that in mind I was considering trying Sandy Neck, Nauset, Chapin, or Duxbury, any of which would save me 30-60+ min's over a trip all the way down Cape from Central MA.
I have been to Sandy Neck one time and seem to remember it being pretty rocky but that may have just been the conditions that day.
So, to any out there who have frequented something other than Race Point could you post up an opinion on where you stay.
Thanks
Sean

Ive been going out on the race for quite a while
Race points the best of all the beaches to drive on.....its worth the extra travel.....not to mention nauset is for yuppies and its nothing special...
Just sucks with the whole "birds are nesting" closings every year and the extreme changes to the beach.....
I remember when all the beaches race point has were open you could spend all day driving going beach to beach....
Assuming youve driven out on more than the race area? high head and head of the meddow are a little more of a challenging for most people getting up the hill at high head is usually fun since most people are retarded and dont like to air down a lot....

Yes, I've done it in the past but now, as in the recent past, its mainly for camping use.
94line-xyota 03-23-2009, 11:36 AM nauset sucks if you are out of town (orleans) which costs around $160, i think that it isn't worth it to get a nauset sticker because you can't even drive out to chatham any more due to the cut.

good info, thanks.
94line-xyota 03-24-2009, 07:37 AM i personally luck out because i only pay 40 for my sticker. BUT no matter who you are you get screwed if those damn piping plovers are out and about. especially if you get too close while walking. they closed all of the primary ORV area for about a month and a half last summer due to 3 pairs of nesting Piping plovers

and from what I understood some, 10? years ago, the plovers arent even 'endangered' anymore they keep it that way for more control of the beaches.
94line-xyota 03-24-2009, 08:25 AM funny how they are endangered here but in mexico they are a delicacy. plus it is great how much money is spent to protect the stupid things when the state and the towns won't spend a cent on us
strokedbronco 03-24-2009, 08:39 AM fplus it is great how much money is spent to protect the stupid things when the state and the towns won't spend a cent on us
I think thats actually your Federal Government f'ing that up! at least at Race Point, up Cape its State/Local but I think they all go off what the Fed says.
PoorFarmPolaris 03-24-2009, 10:58 PM What happened was they came off the endangered list then we started getting all these tree hugging hippes and animal rights people.....its not really the federal gov its the national seashore tree huggers....
People are so stupid here in the East in general tho.....
I had 100000 times more fun flying to CA and going to Glamis and Pismo Beach.....

I have been running Sandy Neck for years and it has its share of rocks all the time. The fishing is hit or miss I mostley miss. Never much in the way of waves the water is normally pretty flat and calm.Same as other beaches the birds can shut down large sections if not all of it. The 2009 season trail pass is $140. Looks to be about 4.5 miles of beach this year until the birds screw things up. Great place to just go hang out with freinds.
we've got the bird nuts controlling traffic on our outer banks here in nc also now.:shaking: this will be the first season where the settlement that was reached is really put into effect. it could have been worse, but it's not good either.
is there no way to get just a day permit or something for the areas in ma? i'm taking a trip to boston at the end of april, and was hoping to make it out on some of the beaches on my way there or on the return since i'll have a 4wd this time. all i've found so far is yearly permits. i just can't see paying that kind of money when there's no way i'll use it more than once.

Race Point in Provincetown/Truro has a 7 day pass. I cant say I remember too many others having anything less than a seasons pass but dont quote me.

And I do highly recommend Race I started this thread to find somewhere as good just closer for me so I can head out more not that it wasnt a good place to be.
awesome, thanks for the link. $50 is still steep, but definitely better than $100+. i remember that area from when i was up there a few years ago, but i was in a car. how fast do the permits go? should i go ahead and buy one beforehand?
also, i see the map listed which is for the winter of 2008-2009. after the 31st, do more of the red areas open up or less?

they really havent opened yet this year so its tough to tell what'll be open. In the past permits sold out like crazy, I guess(from what I have heard) with the new system its been working out well and they are having enough for everybody. So I guess it depends on how bad you want to go. If you REALLY want to go I wouldnt risk it and send in the reservation.
BGNASTY 03-31-2009, 07:30 PM If it were me I'd go the extra 30 min for Nauset. I've had stickers for both beaches and you can't beat Nauset for scenery, surf, and fishing. My local Jeep club (CCJC) just did our annual stake day on Sandy Neck (replacing protective fencing), and there's always a good group of Jeeps from the club there every Friday evening throughout the summer.
durcrim 04-06-2009, 01:12 PM I'm biased towards sandy neck, probably because it's right down the road from me. It's a great place to go have a good time in the summer, not so much for wheeling because you can really only drive down the beach, not much in the way of exploring. Those plovers do have a nasty habit of shutting the place down to about 1mi of driveable beach in the summer though...
see you out there.
strokedbronco 04-06-2009, 01:32 PM yeah I think I'm gonna try Sandy Neck this year. Its closer and if diesel goes back up to $5/gal that'll make me happy.
CharlesRoland 07-11-2009, 05:45 AM :homer: I'm new to this forum, but just thought I'd chime in about Race Point. I know it sucks that people can't easily get permits - but I think it makes for a better driving experience. It's less crowded and any damaged caused people is minimized. Of course it just takes one uncaring and thoughtless driver to ruin it for everyone else. I've seen an ignorant driver run over wildlife on purpose - and then laugh about it. I'd rather have stricter rules and less permits available in exchange for a more natural and personal experience. The Outer Cape has just become to popular for yuppies and tourists who don't understand this unique landscape.
However, I think that Massachusetts residents should get special driving privileges and primary consideration for permits. Massachusetts residents should have access to special areas closed off to foreigners:flipoff2:. We deserve it for putting up with out-of-towners all summer.
strokedbronco 07-22-2009, 10:01 AM some pictures to spice up my thread. Sandy Neck is a little rockier than I would like but you can find some nice spots. The people are cool and everything has been great though
strokedbronco 07-22-2009, 10:03 AM a few more
cams1021 11-18-2009, 10:05 AM a few more
My house is somewhere in one of these pictures :D. I can see sandy neck across the channel to barnstable harbor from my place.
To the OP,
Chapin and sandy neck both require permits, but last I checked with chapin it was for dennis residents only. I had a race point sticker on my CJ, so I just drove on chapin anyway. Passed a ranger who didn't give me any trouble. The beach access dwindles every year, however:(
