: Not starting, possibly water in the engine?

So firstly I'm driving a 86 f150 with a 5l 302 (fuel injected) and I was out doing some snow/mud with my friend. So I go through this puddle on the way out and my truck dies, right in the middle. I know, I know, mud sucks, but hey I'm working with 33"s right now =p so, I throw on a tow strap and my buddy in his jeep towes me out. I get out of the puddle and throw on some jumpers. No luck, I turn the key and everything goes out and it just clicks, no starter, no motor turning, nothin. So we strap backup and the little jeep pulls me out to the nearest real town about 20 miles out. I called AAA for a jump and maybe some general help incase we missed something. Didn't have tools last night so I did what I could. Finally realized the air filter is soaking wet and full of mud puddle water. Check the intake and it was wet past the filter. So I believe I have water in the engine, I was told to remove the spark plugs and crank it over, this would shoot the water out. I took out 3 plugs and gave it a try, nothing happened, so since it was 32 degrees out, im sopping wet I just had it towed to my friends grandmas house and came home for the night.

Any ideas? I did notice last night when I pulled the 3 plugs and I put one wire up to my AC compressor and had my friend turn the key it didn't throw a spark. Think this may be my problem? After cranking it for about 20 mins off and on it sounds like my starter is dry again because it is turning. The AAA guy forced it over with some jumper cables, so he thought it was good also. So I have Gas, air, and no spark is what I am thinking.

Any Ideas would be very helpful, thanks for reading

Is the distrubutor full of water?

If you want to evac the water from the engine, you have to pull all the plugs first, otherwise its pointless.

X2... even if just one cylinder has water in it she wont turn over. You can't compress water. Pull all the plugs, turn over by hand first with a wrench on the crank, etc. Then try crank it over with the starter for a bit. Throw your plugs back in. Check in the distributr cap for moisture, if it's wet wipe it out and spray a little wd-40 in there. Try to start again.

There is no way to know which cylinder how water in it. So not pulling all the plugs is like playing Russian Roulette!!

I hope you read this before you bend a connecting rod!

Yeah, I replaced the starter today, it failed when I took it in. Still nothing. Dist cap is fine. I'm in school so I'm done till tomorrow, I'm having it towed home soI can take it apart if I need to.

I'm thinking it may have bent a rod when I was in the puddle, but I don't know yet. I'll pull all the plugs once it is home. Any other way to tell? those plugs are a major pain in my ass. One spins but doesn't come out, putting the 3 back in today was lame too. Had to break off the heat shield to get one in the other one was just as bad. never had a problem with plugs before haha. Oh well, I think it'll all work out now that that damn shield isn't in my way =)

How will i know if a rod is bent? No experience dealing with that kind of problem yet. I know I can pull it all apart and look but any way to tell without doing all of that?

your an idiot. :shaking: You have to pull ALL THE PLUGS or its not going to do SHIT. :shaking: Once all the plugs are out, crank it over for about 15 seconds, then wait, then do it a couple more times. Re-install plugs after cleaning and it should fire up. If it doesnt crank, chances are you fucked it over.

We had a serious flood a week ago here in town. Since then, we have 3 vehicles with bent rods from dumb ass people driving in water. Its a real deal. Stop fuckin around with the starter and pull the plugs. :shaking: Its basically putting a solid block in your cylinder. It CANNOT compress, so the motor WILL NOT spin over. Chances are you bent a rod. Usually, a starter is not strong enough to bend one. But, sucking it in with the engine reved up will distroy an engine.

Also, if it starts, turn it off and change the oil. It probably leaked past the rings into your oil.

I know that now. The first person to suggest pulling the plugs told me to do 2 per side(obviously didn't work). So now I know I need to do them all, only I found that out after I replaced the starter(but bad anyways so needed to be replaced before it'll run either way).

As for me being an idiot, yeah probably true =p I think I know why so many people hate mud now to haha.

Thanks for the help guys.
