: Metric unit-bearing 60 question

So I just picked up a metric, ball joint, unitbearing 60 out of an 02 F-350. I got it cheap and it's way better then my stock 44 I'm running now.

The question is, is there a way to convert the unitbearings to a regular old 60 spindle? Maybe swapping out the steering knuckles? or am I pretty much stuck with the unit bearings? I could really care less either way. It needs unit bearings so if it is doable I'd like to figure out before I spend any money.

I know dynatrac makes a conversion kit to run an inner and outer bearing, but I can't tell you about converting it back.

SOLID Axle makes what you want, but they're $$$...

Keep the unit bearings, thats what all the bling axles run now days anyways.

Either re-drill it for a different pattern or find a matching sterling 10.5 rear (think disc brakes and more clearance but the same strength as a 14 bolt). I picked up my rear for $150 out of an 03.

Eventually you'll want to broach them out for 35 spline outers as they are stock 30 spline. Also it will probably need some hubs or drive flanges.

Its what 400$ for new unit bearings?
like 2k to make it normal style?
I think its pretty clear.

I can get unitbearings for $50 a set... used factory take offs.

I'm just gona run them. I saw all the bling spindle conversions. I was hoping that maybe someone knew of a hillbilly junkyard conversion. Oh well, unitbearing it is.

I also don't care about the metric bolt circle. I don't have a rear yet and if I can't find a 10.5 I know I can get a conversion unitbearing... 8 on 6.5

Thanks guys

Dynatrac (http://www.dynatrac.com/products_freespin_ford.html) makes one also, but I'm sure it's not very cost-effective either.

And Joe, at least Wanderer doesn't hide behind a pseudonym here! :flipoff2:

Think again... I saw you buy the axle on the other board. :p That's why I mentioned that those knuckles were expensive, because I know how much of a cheap ass you are when it comes to your Jeep.

Don't have the details but a friend of mine deals a lot with the Quigley 4x4 van conversion guys. He told me they do it all the time by redrilling and using bigger studs. I'm pretty sure you could contact Quigley directly. I'm sure the price I can get them for is an "inside deal" so I won't post any details

I'm pritty sure you can use ttb 50 knuckles on the super duty axles you just ahve to use the super duty ball joints there was a thread on here about doing that

I did a serch here and saw some dude that used the ttb 50 knuckles and made his own inner C's. I need to go back and read the whole post to see if it did work out.

I did think of maybe doing that and fabbing some inner C's like Tom C. did on those Yota axles he's building.

There are a crapload of TTB 50's at the Junkyard. Sure would be nice to not have to buy the unitbearings AND find a 10.5. Rear 60s are pretty damn easy to find.

Most rear 60's are 30 spline junk. Keep that in mind...

Yeah I know. There are a few good ones (32 spline right?) here and there. Also a few 14 bolts from time to time.

Good god; just put some damn unit bearings on it and run it!!

is it in yet?

The unit bearing axles are so nice and easy to take apart......

is it in yet?

It's 35 spline... 32 spline is D70 stuff.

you're still gay.

Prove it!

I can prove Dana 60's Van's are 32 spline. :grinpimp:

You use dodge ball joint 60 knuckles with ford kingpin spindles and chev stubshafts, drill the spindles the same pattern as the unit bearing pattern on the knuckles and use the ford outers. The dodge knuckles are spaced out farther from the housing hence the shorter ford spindle with the longer chev stub, bingo! Grind down the shafts a little and super turning radius. One of my buddys just did the same thing on his pro mod using a housing out of a 04 superduty

pulled that out of a diff thread..http://www.pirate4x4.com/forum/showthread.php?t=773619

Problem is the knuckles are $$$$$$. You're better off selling the unitbearing / ball joint axle and finding a kingpin for $800

I'm just gona run the unitbearing axle as is. It'll be way more then enough for some 40s or 42s
