Just out of curiosity, what makes you refer to these fine beasts as Broncos? Is there REALLY anything Bronco-esque in there other than a clip, maybe the VIN plate, and pedals? Or is it the prinicpal of the thing, like the Crusah?

Lee's rig has been evolving for quite some time, it started as a full EB, I think the sheet metal and front 2/3 or 1/2 of the frame is still "original".

I knew Tim was going to do drastic changes to it , but DAWM, that is looking Sweet!!

I wondered the same thing. No doubt Bronco Alley's influence.
The Barbie Mobile has the motor in the stock location, right over the front axle unlike mine which has been moved back 16" to allow room for the portal axle. Lee said he is afraid he would turn it over backwards if the engine was moved back ( 104"! ) which is what needs to be done unless you want the thing really high.
It will be higher than what's in the pics. I looked under the front, there is no oil pan on it and the front axel is almost into the connecting rods. Maybe with the money he saved from not doing a portal front axle will go torwards a dry sump. Tim (Bronco Alley) has been talking about using a dry sump oil pump in a 'crawler for a while. The engine can set closer to the axle because of thinner oil pan. I'll have to ask him sometime.
The rear axle is a non-steering Ford 9"/unimog hybrid. It's cheaper and easier to build than a steering axle because custom axle shafts aren't required. Just cut and respline the 'mog shafts, they are big enough, and you are good to go. Lee said it wasn't for monitory reasons that he went with the mix-match. I guess one portal is better than none. The front 9/60 (Ford9" center, d60 outers) is cool enough though. :D

And the tires... come on guys, your'e just used to seeing a full size EB. Theyr'e 38(.5)s :D

Doug K
08-31-2002, 01:41 PM
Lee would never back down from a mod because it was expensive...he is basically made of the Green stuff.

I think the reasoning on this miz/match is because Lee has always been a propnent of the theory that the reason EB's climb so well is their axle placement directly under the motor. He likes how it climbed from the factory so he kept that setup. He also didn't WANT a steering axle in the rear because he never wanted his EB to be a buggy/creation (a little late for that now I think, but to each his own).

His rig will perform well, he has been building capable rigs for the last 5+ years in his garage with his own fab skills which are formidable.

I would definetly assume that his EB will get the dry sump...he's been talking about it for a while... haven't talked to him recently, but I assume he'd rather spend the money that way than go any higher on the lift...it already looked pretty tall to me.

Isn't that rear reverse rotation? Therefore isn't it an 8.8 diff? Gonna be the weak link with those tires.

Mark Williams sells an oil pump to pump oil up to the pinion support bearings. This could be how they are doing it.

Think its a standard 9 running backwards.

Even if it was an 8.8 with the sort of diff ratios hed be running in the pumpkin (I guess something like a 3:1) with the portal reduction outers I dont think it would ever give any trouble.

Bloody sweet rig.

We do have comps but not like your rockcrawling comps yet, but it will come. I think that we are defintely moving towrds what you guys are doing.

Its only in the last couple of years that we are starting to get purpose built rigs and not modified daily drivers and tourers. And with this has also come some bigger tyres (38+).

Now we are are starting to see some rigs with bigger axles (there would only be 2 or 3 competition rigs in OZ with front D60s that I know of) and this trend will definately continue. (I got a front D60, rear D70 , 302W, BW T18 and a LT95 (rover transfer case with 3.3:1 gears) sitting in my shed for my next build up)

Our TTC is on next week (im going down to spectate) and this comp would have most of the best built rigs in OZ competing (except mine :D - I just couldnt go down there with my D44s and 42s :nuke: ).

Heres a pic of some our local rockcrawling. We do have lots of rocks but not the huge expanses that you guys drive on. We are finding more all the time.

I just got back into town so I thought I would reply to some of the questions about my truck. Thanks John for posting them and fielding some of the questions.

The reason I went portal rear and conventional front was to keep the weight low. The motor sits in its stock (horizontally) location, but it has been dropped 2 inches from stock. This allowed me to get the crank center down to 31.25 inches at ride height with 38.5 swampers. The pics that were posted ARE at ride height. I also wanted the front axel under the engine. Not sure if its right or wrong, but I was trying to keep most of the weight biased to the front end in hopes of it climbing better. Most of the climbing success I give to stock bronco's and Toyota's I believe is due to the weight bias. Most ARCA rigs sure seem to be going to way as well.

It IS street legal here in Texas due to it being classified as an "Antique Vehicle" and not needing inspection.

Believe it or not they are 38.5 SX's. I really dig the cushy seats as well, they are out of a 97 Cobra Mustang and it is 100% bronco (in spirit anyway).

What the heck is wrong with calling it a bronco?? It rolled off the essembly line in 1972 as a Bronco and its been one ever since. The VIN says it is, the state says it is, and the title says it is. Yes its modified and there is not much factory Ford left, but big deal.

If anyone is curious they just ran a artical in this months Petersons about it in its old state (they are a little behind I guess). Looks quite a bit different now. I have some more current pictures than what John posted if anyone can tell me how to get them on here.

Tim from Bronco Alley built the internals on mine that make it oil properly. I would hate to divulge any secrets that are not actualy my property to share.

As far as the cost of the portal swap I do not have an exact figure for you. We did allot of horse trading for the entire project so sorry to say that I can not help much there either. I am sure he would be more than willing to build a few more very reasonable since he has the tricks down.

Thanks, but whos might that be? Its the only 'hot' raspberry bronco with flames I have ever seen. I am assuming you are referring to JR's. Not to take anything away fron JR's rig. Its one of the baddest trucks I have ever seen. The chassis have very little if any similarities. Ford made the body panels look alike, but thats about it. I assure Tim built this chassis purly from scratch. Other than the fact that they are both bronco's they are totally different trucks.

I removed the F O R D completely when I narrowed mine, then I put the chrome sport trim level F O R D emblems on to replace the stamped in letters, It made for only having to cut 2 sections out of the grill, instead of 5 sections... (I removed the F O in one section, and the R D in a second section) to leave the stamped letters I would have had to cut a piece out on each end of the letters, and a piece out between each of the letters too...

and krylon, mine isn't wquite as elaborate (still a tub on frame construction), but it's all factory steel parts... I believe lee's is factory steel too...

The body panels are all OEM except the hood thats aftermarket fiberglass. The old wheelwells were filled and moved back, but the quarters remain stock length.

I really liked the locking ram set-up I had previous, but since I went with full hydralic steering it gave me the oppertunity to finally dump the trac-bar and go with a 3 link wish-bone up front. I was truely amased that Tim was able to get 100% of the steering components behind the axle assembly, especially with a 3 link. The wishbone is the lower link that converges at the centerline of the axle. The uppers attach about 6" above the axle tube.

I am running a 4 link rear with the lower links converging behind the t-case. The uppers run slightly down hill which will give me a few degrees of roll "understeer". The covergance of the links give a instant center that renders 114% antisquat. The roll center is much higer than my last link suspension so road driving should improve. It will be iteresting to see how well it works.

I will try and get it up on the lift and get some suspesnion pics if anyone is interested.

btw, onewhitetj, thanks.

But he has front and rear steer......he coud start it up and go backwards to avoid a ticket right :flipoff2:

Hey Lee....I have been wondering about this on your rig...

What diff gears did you use to match the traditional axle in the front with the Portal axle in the rear?

it's not rear steer

Lee N

The front is 5.13 and the rear is a 2.47. The 2.1 reduction in the portal boxes make them come out real close.

Why not call it the Pink Lady instead of Barbie :D. Or is that name taken?

Do you have different lug patterns between the front and rear? If not how did you get them the same?

Lee N
09-17-2002, 12:02 PM
Trust me, the nickname "Barbie" IS NOT one that I picked. I was at a good friend's daughters 6 year birthday party and she got a "Barbie" Bicycle. Someone was quick to point out that it was the EXACT same color as my truck. They have labeled it "Barbie" ever since. The only other name that was out for a while which was a little less insulting was "The Flaming Rock Pimp". As you can tell my buddy's around here use every chance they can get to harrass me!

The bolt pattern is 5 X 5.5 both front and rear. I converted the front D60 knuckles to 5X5.5 and the rear portal boxes have an adapter ring from the original pattern to 5 X 5.5. The ring has counter sunk holes for the stock Unimog pattern and studs for the 5 X 5.5.

That is what I admired about him. He was happy with the first build and pretty much left it alone and wheeled it for 5 yrs.

That would be nice/smart.

What is he building now?

Its a Dart aluminum race block. Its punched out and stroked to 460CI. I have it on the dyno today. Will get back with numbers.

Thanks for all the complments on my rig. Its still running strong. I have not done too much to it over the last 5 years except wheel it and put fresh paint on it about once a year. I did switch from the swampers to MTR's then to Krawlers, but nothing else major.

Looking for the new one to be a little longer and lighter. I am running internal bypass coilovers in hopes of it doing well at high speed in addition to the rocks. I will keep you guys posted.
