: lookig to buy a 90 waggy......
SCORPION 08-29-2002, 04:57 PM I haven’t searched...So I guess I will get what's coming to me...
Anyway, here goes; I have been looking for a daily driver that is comfortable and I spotted a 90 waggy down the street today.
Asking $1800 obo. Don’t know the mileage, has the typical rocker and seam rust nothing to hideous. It needs and exhaust, tires and it has a busted front driver side leaf. the engine compartment looks pretty clean as does the interior. Not to much oil leaking from it and the axles still looked black not the usually rust red. I didn’t get to start it up or spend too much to inspecting the beast (rain) but it looked tempting.
Any tips for me the next time I go to look at it? I don’t want to insult the guy when I offering him a grand for the thing unless I have my shit together. What else should I look for?
Thanks
WillyPete 08-29-2002, 06:34 PM for a 90 in that condition on a private sale, $1400 or so would be more reasonable. point out the broken leaf spring and the rust and the exhaust and the tires. remind him that exhaust. that'll usually get them to go down. he's probly attached to the waggy. they seem to have that effect.
anyway, check the tags on the diffs for gears. see if it's a 3.31 or 2.73 axle. overhead console adds a bit (like $50). listen to the engine, check the wiring harness. look at the undercarriage and framerails, especially around the gas tank. those are bad spots for rust.
Steve N 08-29-2002, 06:48 PM I paid $400 for my '87. Ultra clean as I'm sure someone will agree, one dent. Absolutely no rust. with a blown motor. A rusty one here isn't worth much. I won't even look at something with rust no matter the price. Sure must suck being from back east, sorry guys.
BostonWrangler 08-29-2002, 08:10 PM I might have an 88 that needs a little work but is all there. It'll be really cheap too. Email me for details. bostonwrangler at hotmail.com

We're talking about Grand Wagoneer right?
4Bangler 08-30-2002, 07:51 AM Open the tail gate and look at the hinge area and the rear floor, also look at the rear spring hangers, shouldn't be problem areas on something that new, but go look at some older ones and look at the areas that those are rusted away at, same body, should trap water in the same areas, I've seen a lot of them with the rear body so rusted that the leaves are poking through into the body. Grand Waggies are cool, Grand Waggies SOA with 35's kick arse.
shawnscj 08-30-2002, 09:09 AM I also have been looking at some Grand Waggy's, and I have found most every one I have looked at to have a very rusty, rotted out frame on the drivers side in front of the rear tire. So watch out!
Kilby 08-30-2002, 09:51 AM I think 1800 is too much...
(but probly not a "rip off", technically).
This summer I saw two (2) 1990 Waggy's
for sale. One in Raleigh & one in Chapel Hill.
Both of 'em were less than 1500 & REALLY nice condition.
(FWIW)
SCORPION 08-30-2002, 12:21 PM My 87 grand had a number of problems.........
-roaring rear diff
-4x4 stoped working
-carb was shot
-rust on frame next to gas tank
-everything leaked, motor-oil and windows-water
-tailgate window came unglued from actuator
-driver door was rubbing on rocker
-could never get to number 8 spark plug
the body was relatively rust free though go figure.
wait a minute, why the hell am I consider buying another one..........it must be the sickness.............
Just thought I would share
SCORPION 08-30-2002, 02:55 PM well, I went back to look at the grand and this is what I found:
-milage 185k
-black oil
-no power stering fluid in resivuar
-more body and frame rust(some frame rust had been repaired around gas tank)
-rear shackle mounts rusted through and the rest of the rear frame looked thin.
conclusion: this one's not for me. I guess I will keep looking round.
thanks
preach 08-30-2002, 03:39 PM gunner or GR8LITE on NEOW has a GW for sale. Look them up. They are both good guys.
Jaffer 09-01-2002, 08:12 PM If it's a straght 6 cyl. you'd want a 1991 + model anyway.
Vastly improved head and fuel injection (MPI).
If your going to build a rig, the MOST important thing to look for is a good frame and body.
The rest is bolt on (usually).
Keep looking ...
