: cut rocker panels
I was thinking of possibly breaking out the sawzall and slicing away at the rockers on my YJ, something to the effect of h8mndys or I ve seen some avalanche vehicles with the same set up. probally using a rocker guard to follow the contour. My question is wether doing this significantly decreases the strength of the tub because of cutting out the webbing in the front and also the door bar in the rear. I am already going to start on a new cage so the mounts would already be different. Ive done a search in this site but mostly seen only when they were being built and not much in the follow up. I would appreciate any info greatly. Thanks 025http://www.rockskullz.com/matts3402/06_10_02/P1010025s.jpghttp://www.rockskullz.com/matts3402/06_10_02/p1010025s.jpg
rkcrawl 08-29-2002, 06:41 PM Go here http://www.jeepshots.com/shots/projects/tube/ for pics of rockers being cut and then closed up.
You HAVE to do something after you cut them. Pauls goes to the frame. I can't remember if H8s goes to the frame or body mounts. But the short answer is, I think you need to shore everything up after doing extensive cutting like that...
The rocker pics are towards the bottom. Lots of them.
Welcome to the dark side newbie :flipoff2: :D
Jason R 08-29-2002, 07:31 PM I really don't see the point in all the work of "high clearance" rockers. Just make some guards for them and youre good to go.
If you notice H8Monday (Jeff with Ronalds Mcdonald's YJ :flipoff2:) fucked his up...so in my opinion not really the worth the time. Looks sweet though...
Sorry H8 couldn't resist.
:D
Actually, when looking close after h8 had used his I thought i saw a rather large crack in the sheet metal? also can some one tell me if the pic of my jeep is showing up because it is just a little red x in a box on mine, but then alot on this site doesnt show up on my computer for some reason? I am in a 50/50 split decision on this so the more info. i can get would really help.
thenodnarb 08-29-2002, 10:34 PM stop trying to copy me 025. HAHA :flipoff2: I was gonna do that. i suppose your gonna paint it yellow too eh?
BTW guys, this is no newbie. his jeep is friggin bad @$$. check it out at rockskullz.com under matt's project jeep.
I would totally do it. if fact I will be when this junk gets running. theres supposed to be a guy in a local club that did this. the widowmakers I believe? I think you dont have to go to the extent H8 did. he made it look seamless. I think you shoud just cut, then bolt on some 1/4" steel bent at two 45's that tie into the mounts.
Scout Dude 08-29-2002, 10:41 PM I think that Jeff did split his..but he is a little harder on his rig than most;) :D.
On a trail rig, why would you do this? Rockers work as great pivot points. And, once you get enough tire under ya, you hardly touch your rockers...
BTW, I can totally see why Comp rigs would angle them. I've seen flags come very close in the area. (Although, this usually involves the rear tire running it over in the end:flipoff2: )
I guess on a trail rig this idea is a little excessive but looks bad @$$ when done right and I imagine that it helps performance even more. I think the idea of bolting on some rockers over the cut from the bottom of the door to the body mount sounds good. but would probally need additional bracing to keep it from folding upward and inward, seeing how there would be no support to speak of under the door anymore. Ive always had the philosophy of keeping the body and frame separated, so to me welding tubes back to the frame frome the rocker would turn into a cracked up mess.

My driver side got fucked up durring a hard rollover, that had a rock hit the top of the cowling above the A pillar. It compressed the sheetmetal and popped my lousy welds, ath body panel and main rocker tube.
The rockers themselves are still very solid, and have not taken any damage even durring some very hard hits, from the sides and the bottoms.
The rockers along with the tube Fenders and hood gaurd that Scout Dude fabbed for me are the best mods I have ever done to performance modify the body. You will be very pleased with how much more clearance you gain, and how much easier it is to clear and manuever obstacles that normaly catch your rockers and rob your traction, be leveraging the tires off the ground.
Once you get more clearance and dont have to use the body to pivot on, you will appreciate not having to pivot when you can just turn.
Its strange that it doesnt look like that much more clearance, but every so often, I still find myself waiting for the crunch of the rockers landing on a rock, and it just doesnt happen, so you grab a gear, maintain your line, and continue climbing.
Thank you for the follow up, h8. I may just jump in and go for it. sounds like it is a worth while mod. If you have any advice on how to do it, i am open for suggestions. Thanks
H8monday 09-01-2002, 10:13 PM 025,
Its a lot of work. Everything that used to support your seats and the majority of your tub and its attachment to the frame will be cut away.
there are many ways to solve the problems, but it is a lot more work than was suggested to cut it away and add a couple of 45 degree'd plates,(at leats in my evaluation of solving the problems).
Paul (Nasvic) welded his system straight to the frame. I welded mine to a support plate that supported the body mounts and then used the original body mounts.
I think Pauls system is far supperior. if you are going so far as to cut away your rockers for performance enhancements, then its probably time to lose the body mounts anyway.
Honestly 025, if you want to do it, you have to start cutting and start solving design issues.
When you get to the point of cutting ask me then Ill try and help,(but you will have your own design ideas in process at that point).
If you wanna do it, you just got to do it,...Im just warning you that it is a lot of work.
Blitzed 09-02-2002, 06:35 PM we just did my brother in laws rockers with 3/16 plate bent on a 50 deg. angle and tied into the body mounts. All we did was use a skill saw set up for the angle and cut down the rockers, cleaned it up with the sawzall. Bolted on the top banged the flor down the the plates and welded it all up....trick and strong. Oh yeah even a 1/8th of extra clearance is worth it!!

how much did you gain? got any pics?
renegade360 09-06-2002, 08:57 PM doing the almost the same thing, but using 3/16 plate from body mounts to a 90 degree then up the side of the body to the door openings. from wheel well to wheel well. Each rocker weighs about 50lbs a piece before cutting. Also attaching front cage to this. I feel sorry for the rock or tree that gets in the way of these things.

I used 3/16 plate as well. No weight savings at all, but man they are strong. Makes a great spot to tie the cage into, since the way I did mine as well, the body mounts pass throughh it.

WheelingPiazza 10-27-2002, 11:57 PM After watching Nasvik build his and wheel with his I would say its totattly worth it.
Theres alot of work involved in doing this tho. Nasviks is a full cage tie in no body mounts etc.
I watched paul try and hit his on clean up and he only hit it once I think.
