: Rad radiators, who has one?

I finally bolted in the Caddy, looks like I will have enough room for an engine driven fan. I had this big idea of hogging things out and using a 41 inch chev diesel rad, but I am tired of reinventing new wheels and looking to go little more conventional with less work. Jim Maulis has talked up the idea of opening the supports to the body mounts and using a 73 Eldorado 4 core, I would like to find something more modern in aluminum and take advantage of my 3 inch bod lift and use something taller. My old Scout 4 core is beyond shot, so I need to get something new any way. after thing is up and running I would really like to go with a electric or 2, so I am looking for the best cap and efficiency I can get.

Anyone here using something other than the Scout sized stuff?

I'm using the radiator out of the '69 Coupe De Ville that my 472 came out of. Works excellent, runs around 180 all the time, rarely gets over 200.

just speculating... but I don't see why a stock Scout 3-core wouldn't work just fine....

IH motors are pretty hard working, to the needed decent cooling... and I don't see the 500 putting out *that* much more heat..... but maybe it does.

just thinking out lowd since the scotu rateator *would* just bolt in..... just build a good shorud for it....

I've heard, and talked with people, and it seems that 4-cores don't actually work that well.... TOO thick, can't get good cooling, even with good shrouds and new rad's..... yet my old, leaky 3 (or is it 2-core) unit with no shroud and 392 works just fine...

Sorry to but in, but I can't get on the BinderBulletin right now, so I thought I'd come visit the neighbors. Anyway, I've heard the same thing about 4 cores. As I recall, it's mostly a low speed thing, which would come into play if you're crawling around the rocks all day (what seems to be a trend around here). Personally, I run a 3-core HP (whatever that means) from Back Country Binders. Haven't had any problems with it and the claim is that it cools as well as a 4-core (wait, didn't I just say that the 4-core doesn't cool well...) Well, I think I cleared that up...

I'm running a "downing offroad" radiator, its for toyota fj40 , chevy conversion, it fit perfect, just had to build some brackets to widen the radiator to catch the scout mounting , its a four core:D

Per every conversation I've ever had with anyone who works at radiator shops, including one owned by a guy who I wheeled with in AZ, by the time the coolant gets to the 4th row it's now at ambient temp anyway, so the extra row doesn't continue cooling the fluid. Either way the guy I wheeled with wouldnt let me pay him more for a 4 row, that's sayin something.

I can say the 4-core are a PITA, don't seem to help with the cooling. Even with a fixed fan and a good shroud I don't get the type of air movement I'd like to see. So after I piece the shroud back together I'll work on a better seal for the shroud.

Just run the three core, in 90 degree weather this weekend I did manage to boil the coolant, I kicked on the electric pusher and that seemed to help. I wish I had stuck with a 3 core........

well I will gladly stick to the four cores, my experience with hot rods is proof that 4 cores rule!!!!!!!!!! seen to many 3 cores heat up, the right fan, for the style of driving, is also a big part of cooling:rolleyes:

I agree that 4 rows rock in rods. But I dont often do the 1/4 in my rig.. hell it barely sees higher than 2k rpms

Is that in your 800? Do you have any pictures?
