in an effort to keep my center of gravity low and run 37s, i want to order the summit fernderwells(or tubs) whatever you want to call them. At $65 a pair that aint too bad. But i have taken the plastic panels off and have seen the maze of metal shit there is lying behind there. So here are my questions. Has anybody used these? should i cut out the metal that is in the way and weld what is left to the tub? Should i cut it out anyway since i plan to build a roll cage? and last, should i get the 38" or 40"(i figure the 40" will allow for more axle tilt and suspension travel. I got a set of TJ flares to cover them back up. thanks.

summit tubs are kinda flimsy. try chris alston chassisworks. he's in sacramento. he can build you some heavier gauge ones if you dont have the ability to build your own. personally if you have the skills to cut this thing up and weld in some tubs, i think you should be able to fab your own.;)

Build your own and fab them in place. I just finished extending my rear wells 5 inches to accomodate moving my rear axle back. Leave the front third in place and start cutting. When you have the opening the size you want you can start fitting pieces to reconstruct it (I reused the rear third of the factory inner well for the back and patched in between). Build it as heavy as possible.

my buddies have a jd2, mig, and a shiteload or metal lying around their shop, so i could build some, or just cut mine down the midle and place a peice of metal there. O well, thanks a lot for the info guys.

I was asking the same thing to myself a little while ago. I came to the conclusion that the summit ones are a waste of money, they are much larger granted but you really can't use much of them since you really can't move the 'frame rail' in at all. I just cut the stock pieces in half and moved it back about 8-9 inches and added a piece in there. a few things to consider forget about using the rear seat belts as you will end up cutting the mount basically off. passenger side is a breze, I had to make a curved piece to cover in between the outer body metal and where the new 'tub' is drivers side is a biatch since you have to deal with the fuel filler lines. you can leave it where it is but every rock or anything coming off the tire will be thrown at the rubber hose which is a bad idea so you will have to figure something out. the rear interrior plastic pieces will be a thing of the past but that is no biggie. I have 39.5's sitting on it now at full width and I have plenty of room for them at about 8" of lift I should have no problems with the 38.5SX's I plan to run but I am really looking at some 42's Granted I have more fender trimming than I have seen on an XJ before but they should fit with plenty of up travel available.
Now if I can just find a damn 60 front (for less than $1000 I can finish this project.
I will be moving later today into a new appartment and it will take a bit to get the new DSL up and running but send me a PM if you have any questions

my 2 year plan is to have a full interior cage, so the back seat will be taken out, besides, at 8" it will be a little hard to get back there. The one thing i really liked about the summit tubes is that they were tall as well. I want to cut my 1/4 panel really high so that i dont have to have that much lift.O well, whenever i get enough time and money to do all this crap i'll figure something out
