So I just picked up a hypertech max energy tuner for my 01 ford excursion with a 7.3 td. The truck has 90k on it and is not my daily driver ( I only put 5-10k per year on it). Mostly used to tow a heavy trailer about 10k. I have no Pyrometer on it to monitor egts. So Should I go balls out and put the stage 3 tune in or is there a reason to go more mild? Hypertech says that egts will not be to high even in stage 3 towing max load. Anybody with experience with this tuner have any suggestions?

With the hypertech you can run stage III and tow. So you will be fine running around on stage III. They dont dump the fuel to it like other tuners.

Personally I'd keep it down until you find the money for some gauges. $350 for gauges now or $3500+ for a new engine later. Oh and not to mention the transmssion that will not like you.
I can say that on my '95 and brothers' stock '99 & '01 we were able to get the EGT's up high 1400° on extended hills with stock programming, I had at the time intake & exhaust upgraded, the other trucks were 100% stock.
