I was curious if anyone had heard anything good or bad about the new Patriot series of winches from Ramsey. I noticed that NTW has the Patriot 8000 for $609 with a roller and thought that sounded decent. I was thinking about getting an x8000i, but I've heard the price has gone up over the last few months (did Warn put a price freeze on them?). What is everyone's impressions of the Patriot? It seems to be fairly comparable to the x8000i as far as line speed goes, but it has a bigger motor (5.5 hp). Any input? Thanks. ~Steve

While I have a Warn 8000i on my Amigo, I got this link off a mailing list I belong to: http://www.samsoffroad.com/samsoffroadsto/MileMarker/MileMarkerWinches.htm
I dont work for em, never bought anything from them and I get no money for that. Just thought you might wanna see the link.

How much will you use your winch? I use mine enough that it made sense to me to upgrade from a superwinch X9 (Great winch, about as fast as the XD9000i Warns for $635)
I currently have a warn 8274 on the floor in the living room (not married ;)) waiting for a bumper to be built for it. I just got sick of the slower winches since I use it so much.
The ramsey older winches (REP series) weren't too bad, they were just SLOW since they used a small motor, so they had to basically have the equivealent of crawler gears to account for the lack of HP compared to the warns. The patriots are pushing 5HP if I'm right... what you want to look at is the gear ratio and motor power as far as speed is concerned. A winch with a taller gear ratio will be faster, but has to have more HP to pull as hard as one with lower gears.
The quality issue is debateable. Some people love ramseys, some hate them. Most people who hate them do so because of all the horror stories you hear, although there are some around with personal experience to back that up. However, I think few people would debate that you hear and see many less problems with Warns.
OTOH, I would feel comfortable putting an 8K ramsey on a 2500lb. zuk. there's a few guys in town who have that setup. As I said, they're slow, but the zuk is easier on a winch than a scout or fullzie or even a toy will ever be.

Back when I was in GADZUKS! I saw a Ramsey 8000 burn up on a zuk once(Samy with 31" tires in 4 ft of snow.)
