: 94 F150 build
dmmckaskey 03-27-2009, 09:31 AM To start out, I am a novice mechanic, and off road driver.
I got me a procomp stage 2 6" lift for my 94 F-150 I am wanting to install the lift my self just wanted to know if there is any problems i may incur or some tricks of the trade i can use/look out for to make my lift go in easy and not F-up my Truck because i use it as a dd/lawn care truck.
some questions im thinking about=
Spedo (ill just look at the other tread its pretty good)
Bushings?
alignment?
Drive shaft? - will i need to get new ones due to the higher ride height ?
ill be going from 29"s to 35" will i incur any other problems?
94stepsideford 03-27-2009, 01:41 PM d shafts should be fine, do every bushing while you are in there, and if you have anything under 4.11 gears have fun. it will be a dog.
dmmckaskey 03-29-2009, 01:54 PM sounds good, i was starting to worry about needing to throw more money at this mod. i just one of those guys that want stuff done right the first time around. so it will not cost me double later down the road.
Pics coming soon...
f250rollinon37s 03-29-2009, 08:24 PM do yourself a favor and weld the drop axle mounts to the frame crosmember, after a few good miles they will move, causing the alignment to wander
as said above replace the bushings, the axle pivots can be installed easy with a ball joint press ( big C clamp )
shafts sould be ok - if its a reg cab short bed, then the rear can get a little short in the slip yoke
and you must tow a little due to the lawn care - what is the gear ratio ? with 35s and 3.55 it will be a dog - i have the 4.10 in my 250 with 35 toyos and its ok at best.
4x4junkie 03-29-2009, 11:46 PM Get the Skyjacker drop pitman arm pt# FA600 (http://www.skyjacker.com/products/products_search/detail/?id=69760) to go with that 6" lift. The one that comes in that kit is too short to properly realign the steering linkage. Trust me, it'll pay for itself just in saved tire wear alone.
dmmckaskey 03-30-2009, 04:14 PM ill check into the other pitman arm thanks. looks like i need to read up on gear ratios too. because i have no idea what yall are sayin. lol
oh by the way i put some pictures up http://photobucket.com/dmandmisspiggy
(as i know yall like pictures)
swamperford 03-30-2009, 04:29 PM coat all of the fasteners in wd40 or pb blaster one or two days before you start tearing it apart. it will come apart so much easier. also wash the underside of the truck really good. nothing pisses you off more than dirt and mud chunks falling in your eyes.
LegendKiller89 03-30-2009, 08:41 PM PB Blaster man's best friend! :flipoff2:
dmmckaskey 04-22-2009, 07:48 AM okay so i finally got my radius arms in to complete my kit, i waited over a month for 4wp to get it in and after calling for the last 3 weeks on Monday, i called yesterday and the manager said oh yea ive had them for like 2 weeks..... interesting that they never called me to say that they were in and when i called to check i was told they were not in but on the truck coming over (bs) oh well cant win them all.
Now for the fun part, the tires i want are on a back order till like aug. its the km2's ill prob get some off of craigslist for the time being.
my tranny started to fall out of gear into neutral, without notice driving down the hwy. doesn't seem to care when. so im looking at a rebuild for her and prob will go ahead and put in a shift kit, and a tranny cooler, so the rebuild needs to be done b4 the lift goes in.
Btw i pick up a few cans of that pbblaster.
Nor Cal Wheelin 04-22-2009, 08:46 AM You should really consider having the truck geared while you get the tranny rebuilt. Trying to push 35" tires around on stock gears, just wears shit out. The gears are actually more important, than the lift kit for running 35's.
dmmckaskey 04-22-2009, 08:52 AM what do i need to to that? can i do it my self?
Nor Cal Wheelin 04-22-2009, 09:05 AM It can be done by an individual... It totally depends on your tools and skill level. If you are gonna spend all this money though, you might as well have it all done together. Getting the tranny rebuilt at the same time the gears are done would make for less overall down time. It shouldn't cost that much to have a shop throw them in for you. I would run nothing less than 4.56's either.
dmmckaskey 04-22-2009, 09:18 AM okay, i know i need to get that done. ill call up the shop and see what they can do. how big of tires would i be able to run with that gear ratio. its a good possability that later down the road bigger tires will be put on. but for now its gonna be the 35s
Nor Cal Wheelin 04-22-2009, 09:36 AM Yeah I guess they would be ok for 35-37"... 37" tires are about it though, and more tire than those axles will handle. If you want to run 38-40", I would step up to 4.88 at least, and 5.13 for 42-44".
If you want to go over a 35-36" tire, I would start saving money for an axle swap. Dana 60 and 10.25. You are gonna be looking at spending some money on them, but they will last. Its easy to do if you plan for it, just start saving money here and there and wait for a good deal. Get your axles, gears, rims and tires all ready, and swap everything at once.
Also, if you are planning on wheeling this thing, I wouldnt go any taller than 6". I would start trimming the fenders, and pushing the axle forward. I am going to be about 6" over stock with 40" tires on my ranger.
samoht517 04-22-2009, 12:31 PM I wouldnt go over a 4.10 if its daily driven else the tranny is gonna be wound way up at highway speeds. My F150 runs 35s with 3.70s and does fine even with all the mountain passes that i drive. If its only for wheelin go with the 4.56 so you could maybe run 37s later on.
Nor Cal Wheelin 04-22-2009, 07:28 PM I would choose the added rpms at freeway speed, before I would choose the added strain on the clutch packs, etc... But thats just me.
I had a 460'd f350 with 4.10's and 35's... It was a good day when I swapped to 4.56's.
dmmckaskey 06-05-2009, 09:37 PM i got my truck back from the shop they had it for 2 weeks. (yea prime time for lawncare in the south) i like the shift kit, puts me back in the seat when im on the gas. :-)and towing with it is alot better had the truck/trailer loaded down with 5cu yards of mulch. i could not get the axles re geared while it was in the shop( tuition was due and i had no extra money) so now its gonna be a few extra months till i get enough money to buy my tires. Im pretty much set on the BFG km2. hopefully i can get all this done b4 the end of the summer and take her down to uwharrie and do some trails.
